Industrial analysis of hydrocarbon gases 25 years ago was limited almost to Orsat-type absorptions and combustion, resulting in crude approximations and inadequate qualitative information. The more precise method of Shepherd (56) was available but too tedious for frequent use. A great aid to the commercial development of hydrocarbon gas processes of separation and synthesis was the development and commercialization of high efficiency analytical gas distillation units by Podbielniak (50). In these the gaseous sample is liquefied by refrigeration, distilled through an efficient vertical packed column, the distillation fractions collected as gas and determined manometrically at constant volume. The operation was performed initially in manually operated units, more recently in substantially automatic assemblies. [Pg.388]

Another thermally efficient kiln is the modem mixed-feed vertical kiln ia which coke is admixed with 8.5—20 cm lump limestone and charged into the top of the vertical kiln by a mobile, overhead charging system. Many kilns that formerly were direct coal-fired or producer-gas verticals were retrofitted to natural gas firing with center-burners and after World War II, dramatically improving lime quaUty, kiln capacity, and fuel efficiency. By the 1960s, this improved vertical kiln had lost favor to rotary and other special kilns because of the supply and cost problems of oil and gas in the United States and the spectacular improvement in rotary kiln performance. Many natural gas-fired center burners were permanently closed and dismanded because they could not be converted to coal. However, the reverse occurred in Europe where the extensive oil and gas discoveries heightened interest in the new, advanced vertical kilns. [Pg.173]

Miscellaneous Kilns. A U.S. kiln, the Fluo-Sohds, appears to be another vertical kiln type, but this is its only similarity. It operates on a different principle. It utilizes as kiln feed only a discrete granulation of 0.225—2.4 mm (65—8 mesh) sizes. DeHcately controlled by air and exhaust gas pressure, the kiln feed of granules is fluidized as a dense suspension. Because it is instmmented, this kiln can produce a very reactive lime at better than average thermal efficiency. The kiln, however, has limited utifity because the cost of obtaining the kiln feed with many hard, compact limestones is prohibitive. [Pg.173]

One of the most efficient implementations of the slurry process was developed by Phillips Petroleum Company in 1961 (Eig. 5). Nearly one-third of all HDPE produced in the 1990s is by this process. The reactor consists of a folded loop with four long (- 50 m) vertical mns of a pipe (0.5—1.0 m dia) coimected by short horizontal lengths (around 5 m) (58—60). The entire length of the loop is jacketed for cooling. A slurry of HDPE and catalyst particles in a light solvent (isobutane or isopentane) circulates by a pump at a velocity of 5—12 m/s. This rapid circulation ensures a turbulent flow, removes the heat of polymeriza tion, and prevents polymer deposition on the reactor walls. [Pg.384]
