Efficiency and Service Life

The menace of photocorrosion compels to restrict efficiency of the regenerative PEC cells. In fact, to increase efficiency (through the increase in photopotential) one has to increase the initial (i.e., preexisting in the dark) band bending in the semiconductor. For this reason, the reversible potential (p° of the redox couple in the cell with, say, n-type photoanode should be as positive as possible. Yet, at the same time it should not exceed the decomposition potential for the semiconductor, (p°dec,p Thus, one is forced to deliberately diminish the cell photopotential. As a result, the cell efficiency and stability vary with the solution redox potential in an opposed way. In reality the cell characteristics always are a result of a compromise between the requirements of efficiency and stability. (Therefore, one should take cautiously higher values of efficiency and service life of PEC cells given in published papers, they might be measured not for the same cell.)... [Pg.425]

Casings are important considerations in providing adequate lubrication to prolong the efficiency and service life of a chain drive. Casings contain the lubricant, exclude foreign materials from the lubricant, and function as a safety guard. There are four basic types of casings used with chain drives. [Pg.598]

A concept of power supply can always be made on the basis of an efficient description of a battery s application. However, to fulfill the above-mentioned requirements, it is advisable to plan the battery dimensions based on principles which may be described as optimizing temperature factors. This method departs from the premise that any battery, which is not subject to impermissible heating under prescribed load, is bound to exhibit the necessary efficiency and service life, i.e. to have the desired operating reliability. The temperature of the electrolyte would ideally display a constant value, merely being dependent on the ambient temperature in the driverless industrial truck, which is itself only subject to minor fluctuations. The temperature of the electrolyte would in this way be directly related to normal ambient temperature. If this were to fall drastically in winter, additional measures would of course have to be taken to raise the temperature of the electrolyte. [Pg.150]

In terms of each part of the reduction cell and the materials for these parts, we will comment on possible links between material quality and design on energy consumption, current efficiency, and service life. [Pg.69]

In the future, the design of new FR molecules will be based on a moving target. Gone are the days when all that had to be considered was relative FR efficiency and effect on substrate properties. Today, and in the future, in concert with the chemical industiy s dedication to Responsible Care , we must consider everything from a flame retardants manufacture, through its distribution, application and service life until its eventual disposal or recycling. [Pg.225]

This AAA-alkaline battery will last approximately 4.65 years [3]. This duration indicates 16% higher efficiency, which will result in a 7% increase in battery service life with a 60% decrease in battery cost. This particular battery clearly offers impressive improvements in efficiency, cost, and service life by using more modern dynamic concepts of energy conversion. These gains or improvements are strictly dependent on the duty cycle of the functions that derive the maximum advantage from the high-efficiency power supply. As the duty cycle increases, so too do the benefits of using an alkaline battery source with a switched-mode power supply. [Pg.203]

The viscous-elastic nature of PAM fluids has a marked influence on injection, production, and gathering equipment and systems. The vibration increases, efficiency decreases, service life is shortened, and maintenance work is greatly increased. [Pg.342]

After modification of the equipment and flow system, the previously mentioned negative influences of the PAM fluid can be greatly decreased less vibration, higher efficiency, longer service life, and less maintenance work. [Pg.342]

Relatively minor improvements in assumed heat pipe capability (heat flux vs. operating temperature and service life) and Brayton turbomachinery performance (turbine and compressor efficiency) were found to provide significant system benefits. Conversely, relatively small reductions in turbine and compressor efficiencies were shown to significantly degrade overall system performance. Thus, Brayton turbomachinery should continue to be a key area of development. [Pg.158]

In order to maintain high energy efficiency and ensure a long service life of the materials of construction in the combustion chamber, turbine and jet nozzle, a clean burning flame must be obtained that minimizes the heat exchange by radiation and limits the formation of carbon deposits. These qualities are determined by two procedures that determine respectively the smoke point and the luminometer index. [Pg.226]

The installation costs for a single impressed current anode of high-silicon iron can be taken as Kj = DM 975 (S550). This involves about 5 m of cable trench between anodes so that the costs for horizontal or vertical anodes or for anodes in a common continuous coke bed are almost the same. To calculate the total costs, the annuity factor for a trouble-free service life of 20 years (a = 0.11, given in Fig. 22-2) should be used. For the cost of current, an industrial power tariff of 0.188 DM/kWh should be assumed for t = 8750 hours of use per year, and for the rectifier an efficiency of w = 0.5. The annual basic charge of about DM 152 for 0.5 kW gives about 0.0174 DM/kWh for the calculated hours of use, so that the total current cost comes to... [Pg.254]

The age-old problem of predicting what will happen to any material after it is subjected to service also exists with plastics. Different data on plastics are available, but typical of so-called progress, there is never sufficient or adequate useful information to predict the service life of products being designed. It is suggested that rather than assume that a lack of data exists, one should determine what is logically available and apply it most efficiently. A potential example of improper design with plastics concerns toys. [Pg.101]

Most of these claims are spurious. In the presence of hard water and the absence of adequate condensate return, no matter how small the boiler, the elements quickly scale up, reducing efficiency and life-span. These boilers may fail in service well before a scheduled acid clean or element replacement service occurs. In addition, regular acid cleaning on small boilers can be risky and is not recommended. [Pg.25]

The length and amount of cracks is assessed according to the Bayer method [72,73]. The ISO standard ozone test conditions involve a test temperature of 40°C zE 1°C and an ozone level of 50 5 pphm, with a test duration of 72 h. Testing is done under static [72] and/or dynamic strain [73]. These are accelerated tests and should be used for the relative comparison of compounds, rather than for the prediction of long-term service life. The method is rather complicated and demands a long duration of ozone exposure. Therefore, in some cases the rate constants of the antiozonants reaction with ozone in solution are used instead to evaluate the efficiency of different antiozonants [74]. [Pg.476]

We consider that the practical electrode s efficiency at operation under high current density conditions and during service life is determined by the state of the particles of conductive additive s surface. With reference to this, we can point out two main factors effecting fundamentally reliable operation of the NiOx electrode. [Pg.51]

Transportation in general is not a value on its own, but serves primary economic, social or private interests. Transport provides access to markets and production sites and thus helps to foster productivity and economic development of production, retail and service industries. Providing the possibility for people to move quickly and safely, modern transport systems furthermore help to use human capital more effectively and to create and develop cultural surroundings. Additionally, efficient transport networks and systems give all people access to high-level education facilities and to the health system. By that, transport helps to increase the quality of life. [Pg.565]
