Effects of Growth Conditions

A number of factors have been studied for their influence on nicotine production. Of these the negative effect of auxins, and in particular 2,4-D, on alkaloid production is worth mentioning (202-204,211,220, 225,226,229,255). In root cultures the addition of indoleacetic acid (lAA) also reduces alkaloid production (196). Light was reported to inhibit nicotine formation (50,255). In a green cell suspension, however, increased nicotine levels were found on illumination (229). Ikemeyer and Barz (243) reported that a photoautotrophic cell line of N. tabacum did not produce nicotine, whereas a heterotrophic cell line did accumulate this alkaloid. Elicitation with a preparation of the fungus Phytophthora megasperma did not affect the nicotine levels of these cell lines. Addition of organic acids to the medium resulted in increased alkaloid formation in callus cultures (up to 3.25%) (230). The first is the prediction of the Habitus made from the characteristics of the crystal structure, entirely neglecting the effect of growth conditions. We will call this the structural form or abstract form. The second logical approach is to predict the Habitus thermodynamically when the crystal reaches the equilibrium state. This may be called the equilibrium form. The third is a method of analyzing the factors that may have an effect by correlating the Habitus and Tracht shown... 

The fundamental work on PolyP metabolism in K. aerogenes has been carried out by Harold and co-workers (Harold, 1963a,b, 1964, 1966 Harold and Harold, 1963, 1965 Harold and Sylvan, 1963). It was shown that the effect of growth conditions on PolyP metabolism is mediated by two entirely different mechanisms.

While the overall effect of the long-chain aliphatic SCL on the transport properties of plant cuticles is well documented, the Influence of the chemical composition of cuticular waxes on the permeability of cuticles is less clear. Therefore, the authors have performed an extended study with the purpose of elucidating the effect of growth conditions on both the chemical composition of SCL and on the water permeability of isolated leaf cuticles. Selected results from this study are reported.
