Effect of sensitizers

A simple procedure to demonstrate this effect of sensitivity is to truncate the theoretical profiles at different layers. In Figure 5 values of the hydrodynamic thickness are shown when the profile is truncated at 1% and at 2%. This clearly shows the effect that reducing the sensitivity dramatically reduces the hydrodynamic thickness as it eliminates segments at the extremity of the adsorbed layer.

In a study of the photoisomerization of 4,4-dimethyl-2-cyclohexenone (8) to 6,6-dimethylbicyclo[3.1.0]-hexane-2-one (9) and 3-isopropyl-2-cyclo-pentenone (10), Chapman and Wampfler48 accounted for the pronounced effect of sensitizer concentration by such a self-quenching mechanism. The phenomenon was exhibited by four ketones with () lowest triplet states but not by benzophenone or acetophenone which have (w, n) triplet states.49... 

In general, fewer complications are observed with (ir, ir) triplet state ketones than with either (ir, /i) ketones, quinones, or aromatic hydrocarbons. The only serious problem observed to date with these compounds is selfquenching, which, however, is readily revealed by the effect of sensitizer concentration of quantum yield.

It may be mentioned that to study the effects of sensitizers on DNA radicals by y-irradiating biologically active DNA in aqueous solution in the presence of sensitizers does not provide useful information, since under such conditions the sensitizers scavenge -OH and thus protect rather than sensitize (Lafleur and Lo-man 1982 for -OH-scavenging see Whillans et al. 1975).

PL of CdSe/ZnS nanorods is partially polarized and the degree of polarization is nearly independent of external electric field. The P-polarized component of the PL is quenched more efficiently than the 5-component. Spectral positions of PL maxima for both components have been deviated weakly with the voltage increased. The effect of sensitivity of PL properties of CdSe/ZnS nanorods with respect to electric field may find application in luminescent electromodulators.

Effects of Sensitizer and Suggested Mechanism. The 2-phenylallyl functionality of the phosphite of Scheme Vn typically has a triplet energy of about 62 kcal/mol... 

It remains to be established to what extent the route of exposure to chemical allergen impacts on the effectiveness of sensitization. Although there is reason to believe that sensitization of the respiratory tract can be achieved following dermal contact with an appropriate chemical allergen, it is not yet clear whether the characteristics of immune responses induced by chemical allergens in different tissue compartments vary in important respects. 

The factors that govern individual susceptibility to chemical respiratory allergy and the impact of environmental conditions on the effectiveness of sensitization remain unclear. Risk assessment and risk management of chemical respiratory allergy would benefit considerably from a clearer understanding of genetic predisposition and the influence of air quality on sensitization.
