Effect of lectins

Symptoms usually resolve within 24-48 h, but one case reported persistent weakness and vertigo lasting 5-7 days. The mitogenic and blood clotting effects of lectins are not seen in toxic exposures. Exposure to smoke from the burning of this plant is known to cause headaches.

The effect of lectins in the diets of humans has been reviewed (Liener, 1991 Liener et al., 1986). Clearly, uncooked legume seeds should not be eaten. The effects of cooking on lectins is not clear, but uncooked seeds containing these compounds should be considered toxic and inedible under any conditions.

Recently, a lectin made from purified elderberry (Sambucus nigra) has been used in the fractionation of normal bone marrow cells. Fractionation minimizes the effects of radiation on normal tissue. This work has been carried out by Dr. Madeleine Mumcuoglu, who patented the elderberry flu formulas, as well as doctors Daphna Manor and Shimon Slavin. There is hope that elderberry contains properties that may have potential in improving the success of bone marrow transplants. 

Elevated ET-1 in SCA patients, even in the steady state, may play an important role in the dehydration of sickle erythrocytes and the resulting enhanced intra-erythrocytic HbS polymerization. Indeed, it has been shown that ET-1 activates Ca2+- gated K+ channels in mouse erythrocytes [34]. ET-1, as a pro-inflammatory agonist, has been shown to induce the production of inflammatory cytokines by monocytes. One of the cytokines, namely TNFa enhances the adherence of sickle erythrocytes to vascular endothelium [35]. In addition, endothehns upregulate the expression of endothelial adhesion molecules such as ICAM-l, VCAM-1 and E-se-lectin, which participate in the recruitment of white cells to the site of inflammation. The overall conclusions that can be drawn from these data is that ET-1 plays a critical role in the vasospasm and inflammation that result in VOC. The major effect of HU in ameliorating the clinical symptoms of SCA likely results from its ability to inhibit the chronically activated ET-1 expression in SCA patients.

A report on the inhibitory effect of wheat-genn agglutinin on cellular transport may be relevant to this study, as this lectin binds to 2-aeet-amido-2-deoxy-D-glucose present in the same, L-asparagine-linked class of oligosaccharide that is affected by tunicamycin.549...
