Educational programs secondary schools

After the Meiji Restoration the systematization of education was also promoted. After several changes by the 1890s, the principal form of the secondary educational system was finally settled ordinary secondary schools, secondary schools for girls, and normal schools (teachers training schools). The secondary school (for boys) system was established by an ordinance of the secondary schools in 1886 and substantially revised by another ordinance in 1899. The estabhshment of the so-called outline program of instruction (official curricula) for the secondary schools in 1902 was especially important.It contained detailed contents of instruction for each subject and each year. Thanks to this outline, education in secondary schools in Japan became highly systematized. ... 

Some examples of successful collaborations between chemists and high school teachers were described at the 9th International Conference on Chemical Education (14). Australia (15), Great Britain and Canada all have national efforts underway to improve their secondary school curricula. The low popularity of chemistry at our secondary schools has various causes for example, a too-extensive curriculum and unsatisfactory selection of the teaching material. Teachers often neglect experiments. There is no clear boundary between the chemistry teaching at primary and secondary schools. It seems indispensable to bring the program of chemistry education at the both types of school closer to everyday hfe, including a reasonable proportion of the theory at secondary schools (Pacak, 1994). 

Keith Fagnou was a man of diverse and exceptional abilities. He was bom in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan on June 27, 1971 and attended the University of Saskatchewan where he graduated with a degree in Education. He taught secondary school but realized his true passion lay in research. Keith moved to Toronto and took third and fourth year courses in Chemistry to be accepted into the graduate program. It was in just such a course that I first met Keith.

Much of the "general education" content and about one-half year ofthe math and science included in US baccalaureate programs ate covered in European secondary schools. Thus, the nominal 3-year BS structures at both technicd colleges and universities should cover the scope of math, science and engineering required by basic level accreditation standards (to actually achieve accreditation, of course, additional detailed standards must be met). Similarly, the MS at both types of institutions should provide sufficient additional engineering and related topics to meet advanced level standards. Note that the flexibility inherent in the EC2000 Criteria would enable both types of institutions to meet accreditation requirements.
