In addition to his long involvement with the journal Carbohydrate Research, his editorship of Advances in Carbohydrate Chemistry and Biochemistry extended through Volume 48, published in 1990, and this completed a remarkable and profoundly influential 36 years of editorial activity with the series.

A list of potential experts can be found on the JECFA Web site. The members of JECFA are responsible for making decisions based on their experience and the scientific information submitted, and they are assisted by the JECFA Secretariat consisting of the FAO and WHO Joint Secretaries and the WHO temporary advisors. It should be noted that JECFA is not a standing committee and can only make decisions during the time of the meeting. Final decisions of JECFA are published by the Joint Secretariat and are made available to the FAO, WHO, CCFAC, and other interested parties. Once a meeting of JECFA has been finalized, the Joint Secretariat cannot modify or amend the interpretation or decisions of JECFA in the written report, but it may make editorial changes. 

The chemistry literature has experienced exponential growth over the last decade or two and the literature of heterocyclic chemistry, like all other areas of chemistry, has experienced an enormous expansion, making it very difficult to keep up with the research reported in this field. Therefore, the review literature has become increasingly important to researchers and teachers who are trying to keep abreast of this field. Hence in this treatise an attempt is made to list all review books, chapters in books and periodical articles published between 1940 and 1982 which deal with heterocyclic chemistry. It is the belief of the Editorial Board that such a policy will assist scholars whose research endeavors take them into the heterocyclic arena. 

Mindful of the many distinguished inorganic chemists who have served as Editor-in-Chief for Inorganic Syntheses, it has been an honor to function in this capacity. My sincere thanks are due to many individuals who have rendered invaluable assistance in the preparation of this volume. Voila. Lef s try to get all that information together into a single modest package and make it available to the chemists and botanists who might want it. Should it be a review article in Chemical Reviews or the Journal of Natural Products Several factors said "No." Most botanical review surveys are not searchable except by taxon name (that would assume that you would know the plant from which it came) or by some complex and maddening Chemical Abstracts entry that dealt with some alphabetization that demanded the knowledge of the structure and the way the structure would be listed. And most review articles also insist on a tidy format that is without editorial comment and does not contain volunteered ideas and extrapolations. 

I want to expand on this aspect of role model and mentor. That role is an enormous burden on one s energy, and it is a burden that many women take on gladly but one person really cannot mentor the planet. After I proposed, in an editorial in Chemical Engineering News, that it was time to apply Title IX to chemistry departments and presented a truncated list of reasons why that was a rational proposal,15 I received reams of supportive e-mail from both men and women—students and faculty, as well as people in industry and government.
