Until recently mathematical methods of time series analysis in the environmental sciences have only been used quite rarely the methods have mostly been applied in economic science. Consequently, the mathematical fundamentals of time series analysis are mainly described in textbooks and papers dealing with statistics and econometrics [FORSTER and RONZ, 1979 COX, 1981 SCHLITTGEN and STREITBERG, 1989 CHATFIELD, 1989 BROCKWELL and DAVIS, 1987 BOX and JENKINS, 1976 FOMBYet al., 1984 METZLER and NICKEL, 1986 PANDIT and WU, 1990], This section explains the basic methods of time series analysis and their applicability in environmental analysis. [Pg.205]

Instead of the whole intellectual and social order being subordinated to spiritual principles, every activity has declared its independence, and we see politics, economics, science, and art organizing themselves as autonomous kingdoms, which owe no allegiance to any higher power. [Pg.133]

This new awareness will make It necessary for social and economic sciences to be Introduced in an interdisciplinary approach, this approach which has been talked about so much over the last few years. [Pg.55]

Economic science did not yet exist. Princes counted not the number of men but the number of soldiers, and finance was only the art of robbing people without goading them into revolt. Governments interested themselves in commerce only in order to enfeeble it by taxation, restrict it through privileges or dispute its monopoly amongst themselves. [Pg.129]

It has to be noted that all the variables are not important. In social and economics sciences, many of such variables are called random variables and expressed as U. Taking a simple example. [Pg.277]

When the objective function and all the constraints are linear functions of x, the problem is a linear programming problem. Problems of this type are probably the most widely formulated and solved of all optimization problems, particularly in management, financial, and economic applications. Nonlinear programming problems, in which at least some of the constraints or the objective function is nonhnear, tend to arise naturally in the physical sciences and engineering, and are becoming more widely used in management and economic sciences as well [20, 21]. [Pg.429]

Some of the seminal work in game theory was done by the mathematician John Nash in the early 1950 s, with later scholars building on his work. Nash along with John Harsanyi and Reinhard Selten received a Nobel Prize in Economic Sciences in 1994 for their work in game theory. The political scientist Thomas Schelling received a Nobel Prize in Economic Sciences in 2005 for his work in predicting the outcomes of international conflicts. [Pg.836]

Engineering Economics Science focused on determining the best course of action in designing and manufacturing a given system to reduce uncertainty and maximize the return on the investment. [Pg.1178]

Various approaches to define said terms are adopted, particularly when taking the perspective provided by the engmeeiing and economic sciences into account. Here, one should especially take note of the management sciences. That we often use the term information may also stem from the fact that we regard this term as a primitive notion - something not requiring any definition (Stefanowicz 2010, pp. 11-13). [Pg.189]

Lord, P.R., Economics, Science and Technology of Yam Production, North Carolina State University, 1981. [Pg.366]

Haber lived for science, both for its own sake and also for its influence in shaping human life, culture and civilization. His talents were wide-ranging, and he possessed an astonishing knowledge of politics, history, economics, science and industry, meaning he might have succeeded equally well in other fields. He continued to work on a number of areas of chemistry after World War I, and developed friendships with other key scientific figures of the era Einstein and Max Planck, for instance. [Pg.245]
