Theory games

The problems of operations research have stimulated new developments in several mathematical fields various aspects of game theory, stochastic processes, the calculus of variations, graph theory, and numerical analysis, to name a few. 

Example 1.—Two persons X and Y jointly own an object worth 3. Because joint ownership invites trouble, they decided to make sealed bids (each person s bid is not known to the other) for its possession. The one who bids higher gets the object, but he has to pay a compensation to the other person, equal to the latter s bid. They decide that each can bid, 0,1, 2, 3, or 4 dollars, and if both bids are the same they will sell the object for 3 and share the money equally. Neither blows what the other one will bid, and they both resort to game theory for advice on how much to bid.

Decision Theory Formalism in the Behavioral Sciences.46—A formal method for examining decisions is developed through the use of a utility matrix [ tj] similar to the payoff matrix of game theory. To act rationally is to do as well for oneself as one can. When two or more rational individuals interaa, they may do much worse for themselves than they could have done. This insight is perhaps the main practical achievement of game theory, or the theory of interdependent decisions. But the theory is also useful in a number of other ways. In faa, once one has come to appreciate it fully, it appears not to be a theory in the ordinary sense, but the natural, indispensable framework for understanding human interaction. It is, in that respect, more akin to logic than to an empirical discipline. It becomes an empirical theory once we add principles of behavior that can be tested and found to be true or false, but it does not stand or fall with empirical testing. 

Polyominoes were considered first by Conway, Penrose, Golomb as tiles (of R2 etc. see, for example, [CoLa90]) and in Game Theory later, they woe used for enumeration in physics and statistical mechanics.
