Ecological theory would predict that the natural products produced by plants and animals would be multifunctional so as to be maximally adaptive for the producers. This phenomenon, described as alkaloid parsimony, has been detected with some frequency in spite of the fact that more appropriate in vivo ecological studies utilizing realistic bioassays are still required.

Corroborative information is data derived from similar studies with similar stressors that tend to support the conclusions of the risk assessment. Science is inherently conservative, and the similarity in data and conclusions of related studies enhances the credibility of the current risk assessment. However, similarity to previous conclusions or ecological theory does not mean that the current study is flawed it may mean that the previous work is not as similar as originally thought or that the overall paradigm is incorrect.

If we want to do a better job of assessing the risks of pesticides and other human impacts on ecological systems, our focus has to be on developing models that are grounded in ecological theory that can directly and explicitly incorporate the ecological entities that the assessment aims to protect.

Ecological theory applied to urban areas uses metrics energy input-output ratios and the area of snrrounding land necessary to produce the energy and nutrients required to sustain a city (Collins et al., 2000). The results can be useful for public policy related to the development of different regions and support of city inhabitants.
