As shown in the Lake Brienz case study [13], many more subtle alterations occur in downstream lakes as a direct and indirect effect of the modified regime of water, nutrients and light. Whether such modifications have substantial effects on plankton [14] or other ecological indicators cannot always be clearly answered [13]. [Pg.244]

Measure, index of measures, or model that characterizes an ecosystem or one of its critical components. It may reflect biological, chemical or physical attributes of ecological condition. The primary uses of an indicator are to characterize current status and to track or predict significant change. With a foundation of diagnostic research, an ecological indicator can also be used to identify major ecosystem stress. Volume 2(10). [Pg.382]

Several field gradient studies revealed predictive relationships between chemical stressors and biotic responses. For example, exposure to mixtures of heavy metals has shown concentration-response relationships with macroinvertebrate community indices (Hickey and Clements 1998 (dements et al. 2000). This indicates that response thresholds for ecological indicators (e.g., species diversity and EPT taxa) may be available for use in toxic impacts, providing the nature of the toxicant is known (e.g., metals, organics, and ammonia). The field studies have shown strong concentration-response relationships with stressors, with metal response related to the cumulative criterion unit (CCU) value for the sum of the metals present (Hickey and Clements 1998 Clements et al. 2000). The CCU concept was discussed in greater detail in Chapter 5. [Pg.253]

Furfural 69, which can be manufactured from hardwood waste, is used for the manufacturing of a furfural-acetone monomer <2000MI15>. This monomer is then used to obtain furfural resins which are suitable as binders for the production of particleboards. In a further application, these furan resins of low toxicity have been used as adhesives in the manufacture of plywood <1999MI24>. The use of such resins is recommended as it leads to products with advantageous economic and ecological indicators. The result is plywood with good physiomechanical properties when the Monomer furfuryl alcohol (FA) was used as the adhesive. [Pg.581]
