Earth dimensions

With four-electrode measurements effected from the surface, an average soil resistivity over a larger area is obtained. The resistivity of a relatively localized layer of earth or pocket of clay can only be accurately measured by using a spike electrode. Figure 3-18 gives dimensions and shape factors, Fg, for various electrodes. [Pg.116]

Generally, accidental emissions take place close to the earth s surface. The scale of the turbulence in the surface layer is limited by the distance to the earth s surface, so the characteristic size of the large-scale turbulence decreases towards the surface. Therefore, some degree of homogeneity in a vapor cloud is first to be expected in a thin layer adjacent to the ground (Wilson et al. 1982b). The thickness of this layer will increase as the vertical dimension of the cloud grows. [Pg.49]

In addition to the heteronuclear clusters considered in the preceding paragraphs. As, Sb and Bi also form homonuclear clusters. We have already seen that alkaline earth phosphides M3P14 contain the [Pv] cluster isoelectronic and isostructural with P4S3, and the analogous clusters [Asy] " and [Sbv] have also been synthesized. Thus, when As was heated with metallic Ba at 800° C, black lustrous prisms of BasAs were obtained, isotypic with Ba3Pi4 these contained the [Asv] anion with dimensions as shown in Fig. 13.25(a).Again,... [Pg.588]

The C102 ion is nonlinear, as expected, and X-ray studies of NH4CIO2 (at —35°) and of AgC102 lead to the dimensions Cl-O 156 pm, angle O-Cl-O 11 r. The chlorites of the alkali metals and alkaline earth metals are colourless or pale yellow. Heavy metal chlorites tend to explode or detonate when heated or struck (e.g. those of Ag+, Hg+, T1+, Pb + and also those of Cu + and NH4+). Sodium chlorite is the only one to... [Pg.861]

More than 90% of the rocks and minerals found in the earth s crust are silicates, which are essentially ionic Typically the anion has a network covalent structure in which Si044-tetrahedra are bonded to one another in one, two, or three dimensions. The structure shown at the left of Figure 9.15 (p. 243), where the anion is a one-dimensional infinite chain, is typical of fibrous minerals such as diopside, CaSi03 - MgSi03. Asbestos has a related structure in which two chains are linked together to form a double strand. [Pg.242]

Most monochalcogenides of the Group 3 metals adopt the rock salt (NaCl) structure. Note that the crystal chemistry of divalent europium is very similar to that of the alkaline earths, particularly strontium, as the radius of Eu is almost the same as that of Sr ". For the Yb compounds, the cell dimensions are practically identical with those of the Ca compounds. [Pg.30]

Equation (1.116) allows us to calculate the vertical component of the field in the upper half space when it is known at the earth s surface. Correspondingly, this transformation is called upward continuation and it is used to reduce an infiuence of geological noise, caused by heterogeneities with relatively small dimensions. [Pg.40]

This relationship was derived by Poincare and defines the range of frequencies, where the earth or any planet is not broken. The remarkable feature of this inequality is the fact that it is independent of the dimensions of the planet, and only the density defines the maximal permissible frequency. Introducing the period T, we represent Equation (2.102) as... [Pg.83]

Mission Deep Impact In July 2005, NASA steered a projectile, about 370 kg in weight, at the comet 9F/Tempel (dimensions 4x4x14km), in order to obtain more exact information on its structure and composition. The impact was visible from Earth the Rosetta spacecraft discussed above also sent pictures to Earth. The dust/ice ratio determined after the impact is very probably greater than unity, so that comets are probably icy dustballs rather than (as had previously been surmised) dirty snowballs . The density of the cometary nucleus, which seems to consist of porous material, is roughly equal to that of ice. The impact set free around 19 GJ of... [Pg.64]

There is no doubt that the most important parameter in the organisms familiar to us is water content. The lapidary sentence no life without water is valid for all aspects of biogenesis, whether on the primeval Earth or on another heavenly body. The life processes in all living species known to Man are based on liquid water, which has a number of special properties (Brack, 1993). The dehydrating effect of a high vacuum is assumed to be the most important limiting factor in the transport of microbes between heavenly bodies. This effect would naturally depend on the time required for such a transfer, since some spores can survive for what are, in cosmic dimensions, short periods. [Pg.303]

Similar discrepancies in interatomic distances in Fe2GeS4 and Mg2GeS4 were recently noted by Vincent and Perrault (1971) and Vincent and Bertaut (1972). Both the interatomic distances and the unit cell dimensions of the Fe compounds are smaller than those of the Mg compounds in contradiction to the ionic radii of Fe2+ (high-spin) (0.78A) and Mg2+ (0.72 A) in oxides. The same behavior had been noted earlier by Patrie and Chevalier (1966) in the compounds ML2S4 where M =Mg, Fe, Cr, and Mn and L = rare earth. [Pg.6]

In order to give a physical interpretation of special relativity it is necessary to understand the implications of the Lorentz rotation. Within Galilean relativity the three-dimensional line element of euclidean space (r2 = r r) is an invariant and the transformation corresponds to a rotation in three-dimensional space. The fact that this line element is not Lorentz invariant shows that world space has more dimensions than three. When rotated in four-dimensional space the physical invariance of the line element is either masked by the appearance of a fourth coordinate in its definition, or else destroyed if the four-space is not euclidean. An illustration of the second possibility is the geographical surface of the earth, which appears to be euclidean at short range, although on a larger scale it is known to curve out of the euclidean plane. [Pg.157]
