Earth aluminum

Aluminum is the third most abundant element found in the Earths crust. It is found in concentrations of 83,200 ppm (parts-per-million) in the crust. Only the nonmetals oxygen and silicon are found in greater abundance. Aluminum oxide (Al Oj) is the fourth most abundant compound found on Earth, with a weight of 69,900 ppm. Another alum-type compound is potassium aluminum sulfate [KA1(S0 )2 12H20]. Although aluminum is not found in its free metalhc state, it is the most widely distributed metal (in compound form) on Earth. Aluminum is also the most abundant element found on the moon. [Pg.179]

Cracking catalysts include synthetic and natural sihca-alumina, treated bentonite clay, fuller s earth, aluminum hydrosUicates, and bauxite. These catalysts are in the form of beads, pellets, and powder, and are used in a fixed, moving, or fluidized bed. The catalyst is usually heated and hfted into the reactor area by the incoming oil feed which, in mrn, is immediately vaporized upon contact. Vapors from the reactors pass upward through a cyclone separator which removes most of the entrained catalyst. The vapors then enter the fractionator, where the desired products are removed and heavier fractions are recycled to the reactor. [Pg.244]

Toxicity Variable. The hydrides of phosphorus, arsenic, sulfur, selenium, tellurium and boron which are highly toxic, produce local irritation and destroy red blood cells. They are particularly dangerous because of their volatility and ease of entry into the body. The hydrides of the alkali metals, alkaline earths, aluminum, zirconium and titanium react with moisture to evolve hydrogen and leave behind the hydroxide of the metallic element. Instead of pouring the anhydrous n-butanol solution onto the alkaline earth aluminum silicate chromatograph column, one can simply repeat the treatment with a carbon chromatograph column to obtain the pure product. A Ithough it is the most abundant of the metallic elements in the outer crust of the earth, aluminum usually occurs in natural waters in concentrations below 100 micrograms per liter. High concentrations occur rarely and usually are associated with water having a low pH. The chemical properties of aluminum which control its behavior in water have been studied extensively. This paper is based on current research by the U.S. Geological Survey and on published literature.
