Neutron scattering dynamic

There has been extensive effort in recent years to use coordinated experimental and simulation studies of polymer melts to better understand the connection between polymer motion and conformational dynamics. Although no experimental method directly measures conformational dynamics, several experimental probes of molecular motion are spatially local or are sensitive to local motions in polymers. Coordinated simulation and experimental studies of local motion in polymers have been conducted for dielectric relaxation,152-158 dynamic neutron scattering,157,159-164 and NMR spin-lattice relaxation.17,152,165-168 A particularly important outcome of these studies is the improved understanding of the relationship between the probed motions of the polymer chains and the underlying conformational dynamics that leads to observed motions. In the following discussion, we will focus on the... [Pg.41]

Small-angle neutron scattering has also been applied to the analysis of networks that were relaxing after a suddenly applied constant uniaxial deformation (Boue et al., 1991). Results of dynamic neutron scattering measurements of Allen et al. (1972, 1973, 1971) indicate that segments of network chains diffuse around in a network, and the activation energies of these motions are smaller than those obtained for the center of mass motion of the whole chains. Measurements by Ewen and Richter (1987) and Oeser et al. (1988) on PDMS networks with labeled junctions show that the fluctuations of junctions are substantial and equate approximately to those of a phantom network model. Their results also indicated that the motions of the junctions are diffusive and... [Pg.187]

The chosen form relates to the previous Eq. (A. 12) and expands it by an inclusion of the time dependence. 5(q, t) expresses the correlation in time of the scattering amplitudes measured at two times separated by t. The stationary character of thermal equilibrium states implies that the right-hand side is independent of In dynamic light scattering experiments the determination of S q,t) is accomplished by the photon correlation technique. In dynamic neutron scattering experiments, spin-echo measurement can be used in order to obtain the correlation function. [Pg.392]

Vibrational spectroscopy provides detailed infonnation on both structure and dynamics of molecular species. Infrared (IR) and Raman spectroscopy are the most connnonly used methods, and will be covered in detail in this chapter. There exist other methods to obtain vibrational spectra, but those are somewhat more specialized and used less often. They are discussed in other chapters, and include inelastic neutron scattering (INS), helium atom scattering, electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS), photoelectron spectroscopy, among others. [Pg.1149]

In addition to the above techniques, inverse gas chromatography, swelling experiments, tensile tests, mechanical analyses, and small-angle neutron scattering have been used to determine the cross-link density of cured networks (240—245). Si soHd-state nmr and chemical degradation methods have been used to characterize cured networks stmcturaHy (246). H- and H-nmr and spin echo experiments have been used to study the dynamics of cured sihcone networks (247—250). [Pg.49]

We first examine the reiationship between particie dynamics and the scattering of radiation in the case where both the energy and momentum transferred between the sampie and the incident radiation are measured. Linear response theory aiiows dynamic structure factors to be written in terms of equiiibrium flucmations of the sampie. For neutron scattering from a system of identicai particies, this is [i,5,6]... [Pg.239]

A procedure commonly used to extract dynamic data directly from experimental incoherent neutron scattering profiles is described in Ref. 17. It is assumed that the atomic position vectors can be decomposed into two contributions, one due to diffusive motion, fi /t), and the other from vibrations, Uijt), i.e.. [Pg.246]

A dynamic transition in the internal motions of proteins is seen with increasing temperamre [22]. The basic elements of this transition are reproduced by MD simulation [23]. As the temperature is increased, a transition from harmonic to anharmonic motion is seen, evidenced by a rapid increase in the atomic mean-square displacements. Comparison of simulation with quasielastic neutron scattering experiment has led to an interpretation of the dynamics involved in terms of rigid-body motions of the side chain atoms, in a way analogous to that shown above for the X-ray diffuse scattering [24]. [Pg.248]

We finish this section by comparing our results with NMR and incoherent neutron scattering experiments on water dynamics. Self-diffusion constants on the millisecond time scale have been measured by NMR with the pulsed field gradient spin echo (PFGSE) method. Applying this technique to oriented egg phosphatidylcholine bilayers, Wassail [68] demonstrated that the water motion was highly anisotropic, with diffusion in the plane of the bilayers hundreds of times greater than out of the plane. The anisotropy of... [Pg.492]
