Dual set

A mechanical system, typified by a pendulum, can oscillate around a position of final equilibrium. Chemical systems cannot do so, because of the fundamental law of thermodynamics that at all times AG > 0 when the system is not at equilibrium. There is nonetheless the occasional chemical system in which intermediates oscillate in concentration during the course of the reaction. Products, too, are formed at oscillating rates. This striking phenomenon of oscillatory behavior can be shown to occur when there are dual sets of solutions to the steady-state equations. The full mathematical treatment of this phenomenon and of instability will not be given, but a simplified version will be presented. With two sets of steady-state concentrations for the intermediates, no sooner is one set established than the consequent other changes cause the system to pass quickly to the other set, and vice versa. In effect, this establishes a chemical feedback loop. 

A backyard barbeque grill contains a 20-lb tank of propane. The propane leaves the tank through a valve and regulator and is fed through a 1/2-in rubber hose to a dual valve assembly. After the valves the propane flows through a dual set of ejectors where it is mixed with air. The propane-air mixture then arrives at the burner assembly, where it is burned. Chromosome number. In animals, each somatic cell (body cells excluding sex cells) contains one set of chromosomes inherited from the female parent and a comparable (homologous) set from the male parent. The number of cbromosomes in the dual set is called the diploid number, the suffixploid means a set, and di refers to the multiplicity of the set. Sex cells (called gametes) contain one-half the number of chromosomes of somatic cells and are therefore referred to as haploid cells. A genome is the set of chromosomes that corresponds to the haploid set of a species. 

When large conformational differences are expected between initial and final states of the system, a dual topology file description of the mutation may be useful. When a dual set of coordinates is present, the conformation of the final structure is not determined by the conformation of the initial structure.

International standards are likely to be perceived by regulatory authorities as being outside their sphere of influence, whereas they can exert significant influence on national standards. This may result in a dual set of requirements—one captured in the international standard, the other captured in national regulations.

Rosa et al. [251] investigated catalysts for autothermal reforming of diesel. Numerous systems were tested. Firstly, platinum, ruthenium, cobalt and nickel catalysts on an alumina carrier promoted with magnesium and lanthanides to improve thermal stability were investigated. The second set of samples was composed of cobalt perovsldte catalysts. In addition, Rosa et al. investigated ruthenium and platinum catalysts on lanthanum/cobalt perovsldtes. The samples were tested at gas hourly space velocities of between 20 000 and 80 000 h and S/C ratios from 3 to 5. The O/C ratio was set to between 0.4 and 1.4 and the temperature to 650-900 °C. Amongst the first set of samples, platinum stabilised by a dual set of lanthanum stabilisers, that were not disclosed, showed improved performance over nickel and ruthenium. The power required to accelerate the high inertia bowl to speed can be considerably higher than that required to rotate the bowl at speed. Thus, to start the decanter, the main drive motor need special consideration. This could be one of a number of alternatives, a soft start motor, a specially wound motor, a star-delta starter, or a motor with a fluid coupling. A patented alternative (Alfa Laval) to these methods, used on large decanters, is a dual set of motors [19], Both motors are energised for start up and one is switched off when the bowl is at speed.

When there is a dual set of solutions to the steady state equations as one set is established, the resulting concentration changes may cause a change to the other set. At no time is AG >0. For a sequence A->X->B- C, if A->X is autocatalytic but inhibited by B and if there is a delay between the two processes, concentration oscillations may be observed. Oscillation depends on two feedbacks positive i.e. catalytic and negative i.e. inhibitory.
