In order to understand how pharmacogenomics can be used in the drug research and development process it is necessary to understand what the aims of each phase of this process are, and are what the questions each phase is trying to answer.

The modern medicines regulation started only afterbreakthrough progress in the 19th century life sciences, especially in chemistry, physiology and pharmacology, which laid a solid foundation for the modern drug research and development and started to flourish after the second World War. 

Researchers and drug companies are interdependent. The pharmaceutical industry depends on scientists and clinicians for research, development, and marketing. Conversely, the medical profession depends on research that is largely financed by the pharmaceutical industry. While this interdependence often benefits industry, research, and patient care, conflicts of interest may arise in two main areas (1) drug research and development and (2) clinical education and product marketing.

The ultimate focus of the endeavors of medicinal chemists is to develop a successful drug that will cure patients. However, with the increased regulatory requirements within the competitive biotechnology and pharmaceutical industry, the initial research to achieve this objective must be conducted in a rapid and thorough manner. During the drug research and development process, the important and subtle relationship between chirality and biological activity should be carefully considered.

Such a model is envisioned as part of a preselection module attached at the beginning of the Drug Research and Development automated chemical information system. This module will evaluate chemical structures prior to acquisition. It will include the currently performed search for duplicates, as well as a comparison... 

Several experiments were performed to establish the feasibility of this method on large amounts of data. These experiments required a few searches of the Drug Research and Development biological file to find compounds that met various criteria as a result of P388 testing. These criteria are usually stated in terms of the T/C ratio, which is the median life-span of the treated animals divided by that of the controls.
