Drug names brand/trade name

In most cases, brand names are chosen for a finished pharmaceutical product, that is, for one or various active drug substances in a defined dosage form and formulation. Therefore, pharmaceutical preparations containing the same active drug substance are frequently sold under different brand/trade names, not only in different countries, but even within the same country (see Figure 43.1). 

Co-codamol is a combination of paracetamol (nonnapioid analgesic) and codeine (opioid analgesic). One of the side-effects of opioids is constipation. Naprosyn is a proprietary (trade name) preparation of the non-steroidal antiinflammatory drug naproxen Adalat is a proprietary preparation of the calcium-channel blocker nifedipine Amoxil is a proprietary preparation of the beta-lactam amoxicillin and Dulco-lax is the brand name of the stimulant laxative bisacodyl. 

The classification adopted in the books provides pharmacological distinction among latest drugs with doses and routes of administration along with leading trade name(s) available in Indian market, but it should not be construed as the recommendation of those particular brands. 

Many drugs listed in the Brand and Generic Name Index have several variations on the trade name, depending on different forms of the drug and routes of administration. For example, a drug that is available in tablets, capsules, and injectable forms may have slight variations on the trade name that reflect these different preparations. 

Standard for Drug Names. The most critical issue in drug name selection is that one name should not be easily confused with another.This applies to both generic and brand names. A name must neither sound like that of another drug nor look like another drug name when it is written out by hand. From the industry s standpoint, the challenge is to find a name that is easy to recollect and appropriate for the connotation desired, do not lead astray (safe), and not already a trade name.

In addition each product has a trade name or brand name. Such names are trademarks and usually are the property of the manufacturer. If the same drug is sold by different companies in the same country it will be sold under different brand names. For example Astra and Ciba-Geigy both sell metoprolol but under the trade marks Betaloc and Lopressor. Whereas the generic name...
