Solid particles have a distinct form, which can strongly affect their appearance, product quality and processing behaviour. Thus, in addition to chemical composition, particulate solids have to be additionally characterized by particle size and shape. Furthermore, particles can be generated at any point within the process. For example, nucleation occurs within a crystallization process and large particles are broken down to numerous smaller ones in a comminution process or within a drier. [Pg.7]

For derivations that are more complex and a more detailed description of solid-liquid separation applications, the reader is referred to specialist texts e.g. Coulson and Richardson (1991), Purchas (1981), Purchas and Wakeman (1986), Matteson and Orr (1987), Wakeman (1990a,b), Cheremisinoff (1998), Sinnott (1999) and Svarovsky (2000). Several types of drier and associated drying theory are considered in detail in a number of texts, including Nonhebel and Moss (1971), Keey (1972, 1978, 1991), Masters (1985) and Coulson and Richardson (1991). [Pg.80]

A similar incident occurred on a solids drier. Before maintenance started, the end cover was removed, and the inlet line was disconnected. When maintenance was complete, the end cover was replaced, and at the same time the inlet pipe was reconnected. The final job was to cut off the guide pins on the cover with a cutting disc. The atmosphere outside (but not inside) the drier was tested, and no flammable gas was detected. While cutting was in progress, an explosion occurred in the drier. Some solvent had leaked into the inlet pipe and then drained into the drier [19]. [Pg.5]

Adsorption is the property of certain extremely porous materials to hold vapors in the pores until the desiccant is either heated or exposed to a drier gas. The material is a solid at all times and operates alternately through drying and reactivation cycles with no change in composition. Adsorbing materials in principal use are activated Alumina and silica gel. Molecular sieves are also used. Atmospheric dew points of minus 1000°F are readily obtained using adsorption. [Pg.642]

All the driers discussed above are unsuitable for mixtures with a high liquid proportion (slurries). For such mixtures spray driers (see Fig. 7.2-11) or cyclone driers (see Fig. 7.2-12) are effective. In the former the sluri-y is injected into the drier by a nozzle that atomizes the suspension. Small droplets fall down countercurrently to the hot gas that rises in the conical drier zone. In cyclone driers the sluriy and the hot gas flow cocurrently. Figure 4.2 presents a simplified flow diagram of the ENCOAL Liquid from Coal (LFC) process. The process upgrades low-rank coals to two fuels, Process-Derived Coal (PDF ) and Coal-Derived Liquid (CDL ). Coal is first crushed and screened to about 50 mm by 3 mm and conveyed to a rotary grate dryer, where it is heated and dried by a hot gas stream under controlled conditions. The gas temperature and solids residence time are controlled so that the moisture content of the coal is reduced but pyrolysis reactions are not initiated. Under the drier operating conditions most of the coal moisture content is released however, releases of methane, carbon dioxide, and monoxide are minimal.
