Dow Corporation

The Dow corporation has recently developed constrained geometry addition polymerization catalysts (CGCT), typically Me2Si(C5Me4)(NBut)MCl2 (M = Ti, Zr, Hf) (141) activated with MAO. The homo-polymerization of a-olefins by CGCT afford atactic or somewhat syndiotactic (polypropylene rr 69%) polymers. The metal center of the catalyst opens the coordination sphere and enables the co-polymerization of ethylene to take place, not only with common monomers such as propylene, butene, hexene, and octene, but also with sterically hindered a-olefins such as styrene and 4-vinylcyclohexene [202]. 

Since the dendrimers discovery occurred in a Dow corporate laboratory, the period 1979-1983 was spent filing many of the original dendrimer composition of matter patents [62-71]. The key Dow Starburst dendrimer research team... 

The first criterion was associated with improved secondary and tertiary petroleum recovery processes. This is the justification for the patent appHcations issued to the Dow (50) and Exxon (51) corporations. The additional costs of production and the increased adsorption of such modified water-soluble polymers are detrimental to the commercial appHcation of such polymers and even the academic studies in this area have decreased in recent years. 

In 1989 chlorine was produced by 25 companies at 52 locations in the United States (Table 4). Approximately half of these plants are located in the Southeast (Eig. 2). Two companies, Dow Chemical USA and Occidental Chemical Corporation, accounted for 54.3% of the total operating capacity the top five companies accounted for 77.5%. Although 0.8 million tons per year of chlorine capacity is presendy idle (Table 4), announced expansions are expected to bring an additional 660,000 t of new chlorine capacity onstream by 1992, increasing total capacity by about 6%/yr (Table 5). 

RO membrane modules are available from many manufacturers including, for hoUow-fiber modules, DuPont and Dow/FUmTec Corporation, and for spinal-wound modules, UOP Inc., Millipore Corporation, Nitto-Denko America, Inc., Toray Industries Inc., Dow/FUmTec Corporation, and DuPont.

Although Saran is a generic name for VDC copolymers in the United States, it is a Dow trademark in most foreign countries. Other trade names include Daran (Hampshire Chemical Corporation) and Serfene (Morton Chemical) in the United States, and Haloflex (Zeneca Resins), Diofan (BASE), Ixan (Solvay SA), and Polyidene (Scott-Bader) in Europe. The monomer is of particular economic interest because it is only 27 wt % hydrocarbon. In addition, B. E. Goodrich Chemicals (GEON) supply non-barrier VDC copolymers. 

Benzaldehyde is produced ia the United States by Kalama Chemical Incorporated, Kalama, Washington and ia Canada by Chatterton Petrochemical Corporation, Delta, British Columbia. Both plants were constmcted by The Dow Chemical Company ia the early 1960s to produce phenol from benzoic acid and both produce benzaldehyde as a by-product of that process (6). Production and sales figures for benzaldehyde are not available.
