Fluoroquinolones are extremely well tolerated. The most common effects are nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea. Occasionally, headache, dizziness, insomnia, skin rash, or abnormal liver function tests develop. Photosensitivity has been reported with lomefloxacin and pefloxacin. QTC prolongation may occur with gatifloxacin, levofloxacin, gemifloxacin, and moxifloxacin, which should be avoided or used with caution in patients with known QTC interval prolongation or uncorrected... [Pg.1038]

Dizziness is not rare in patients taking fluoroquinolones, and was observed in 2.8% of patients taking moxifloxacin (16), in 8 and 9% of patients taking grepafloxacin 400 mg/day and 600 mg/day, and in 6% of patients taking ciprofloxacin (17). Prescription event monitoring found markedly lower rates of this adverse event during treatment with ciprofloxacin, norfloxacin, or ofloxacin (19). [Pg.1398]

In a prospective, uncontrolled, unbhnded, phase III trial in 254 patients with community-acquired pneumonia diagnosed by culture or serologically, moxifloxacin (400 mg/day orally for 10 days) produced a bacteriological response of 91% (9). Drug-related adverse events were reported in 33% of patients nausea (9%), diarrhea (6%), and dizziness (4%) were the most common adverse events. [Pg.2393]

Observational studies Oral moxifloxacin (after initial intravenous cloxacillin, cefazo-lin or vancomycin) was studied in 48 patients with orthopedic implant infections due to sensitive Staphylococcus aureus ( = 33) or coagulase-negative staphylococci ( = 15) [40 ]. Overall cure rate was 83% and 71% if the implant was retained. Two subjects withdrew because of side-effects (4.2% 95% Cl = 0,9.5) with one case each of Clostridium difficile colitis and persistent dizziness. Eight relapses occurred, but in the six cases in which the organism was re-isolated resistance did not develop. [Pg.404]

Comparative studies Oral moxifloxacin for 2 weeks has been compared with levofloxacin -I- metronidazole in 460 women with uncomplicated pelvic inflammatory disease [41 ]. Clinical and bacteriological efficacies were comparable nausea (19% and 23%) and dizziness (16% and 15%) in the moxifloxacin and comparator groups were the most common adverse events. One moxifloxacin-treated subject developed Stevens—Johnson syndrome. [Pg.404]

A meta-analysis of the cardiac effects of moxiflocaxin was carried out. Moxifloxacin-received 14981 subjects were included in the analysis. The most common adverse events were those commonly described with moxifloxacin use and included diarrhoea, dizziness, vomiting, increased lipase, increased GGT and rash. Prolonged QTc (corrected QT) ocoured in 72 patients and cardiac arrest in 18. No events were significantly greater than a standard comparator in this study [55 ]. [Pg.368]
