Distribution and presentation of information

In SHE performance monitoring, the user is concerned with information on a few so-called key performance indicators. The SHE information system must be able to provide information on these indicators. [Pg.137]

In analyses of accident statistics and risk analyses, the user is concerned with a limited set of factual data on each accident and near-accident occurrence of interest. As long as the user only applies standard analysis methods, the type of data needed is rather limited and can often be determined in advance. [Pg.137]

to avoid information overload, the presented information must be comprehensible and easy to survey. Managers, especially at top level, must not be overwhelmed by detailed accident data, where it is impossible to see the wood for the trees . [Pg.138]

In using the accident frequency rate (i.e. the number of accidents per one million hours of work) as a key performance indicator, timeliness in detecting changes that affect the accident frequency rate is a concern. This has to do with the fact that accidents are a rare phenomenon. Often, there has to be a significant time lapse before an increase in the accident frequency rate is detectable for use in feedback control. We will come back to this issue in Part IV. [Pg.138]
