The CAREM reactor is designed with a distributed digital control system. Sensor signals are digitalized and fed to micro-processors. Many of the controls are sequential and on-off thus, the control philosophy is particularly amenable to PLC (Programmable Logic Controller), PC (Personal Computer), or Distributive Microprocessor Controls. Proportioning controls can be easily incorporated into such a system. A Graphic Panel Display with digital indicating and recording modes will add clarity for the operators of the plant. 

The BPIX readout and control system consists of three main parts (see Sect. 7.3) the analog readout link between the modules and the FED, the digital control link between the modules and the pxFEC and the slow control link between the CCUs and the trFEC. At P5 the FED and FEC boards are installed in different VME crates in the CMS underground service room. Since one crate of electronic boards is controlled by one PC, the software used for communication is implemented as a distributed system. 

Microcomputer-based subsystems are standard in most computer control systems available today. The digital subsystems are interconnected through a digital communications network. Such systems are referred to as distributed digital instrumentation and control systems because of the network approach used to monitor and control the progress.
