Deer ticks are known to cause Lyme disease. The presence of DEET (diethyltoluamide) in insect repellents protects the user from the ticks. The molecular formula for DEET is C12H,7NO. How many grams of carbon can be obtained from 127 g of DEET ... [Pg.69]

Hydralazine is a drug used to treat heart disease. It is 59.99% carbon, 5.03% hydrogen, and 34.98% nitrogen and has a molecular mass of 160.178. What is the molecular formula for hydralazine ... [Pg.361]

Carotenoids are a class of lipophilic compounds with a polyisoprenoid structure. Most carotenoids contain a series of conjugated double bonds, which are sensitive to oxidative modification and cis-trans isomerization. There are six major carotenoids (ji-carotenc, a-carotene, lycopene, P-cryptoxanthin, lutein, and zeaxanthin) that can be routinely found in human plasma and tissues. Among them, p-carotene has been the most extensively studied. More recently, lycopene has attracted considerable attention due to its association with a decreased risk of certain chronic diseases, including cancers. Considerable efforts have been expended in order to identify its biological and physiochemical properties. Relative to P-carotene, lycopene has the same molecular mass and chemical formula, yet lycopene is an open-polyene chain lacking the P-ionone ring structure. While the metabolism of P-carotene has been extensively studied, the metabolism of lycopene remains poorly understood. [Pg.418]

Fluorescein structural formula and molecular model. This strongly fluorescent dye has many applications. It is widely used to study retinal circulation and various diseases involving the retina. The technique is known as fluoi escein angiography. Fluorescein can be bound to DNA and other proteins and its fluorescence used as a probe of these molecules and their interactions. Fluorescein is also used for water tracing to provide information on the contamination of underground wells. In addition, it has been used as a laser dye. [Pg.360]

Little is known as yet about the molecular mechanisms by means of which chlortetracycline is able to control some viral diseases and penicillin (the formula of penicillin K is CuHisO S) is able to control many bacterial diseases. Knowledge of the molecular structure of chlortetracycline and penicillin does not by itself give the solution of the great problem of the molecular basis of the action of drugs and the nature of disease. We need also to know the molecular structure of the human body, of bacteria, of viruses. When these problems have been solved it will be possible to apply much of our present knowledge, as well as the new knowledge, in a way that will benefit all humanity. [Pg.128]

A In 2003 researchers at Columbia University demonstrated that jS-hydroxybutyric acid may be a cheap and easy way to treat Parkinson s disease. From the molecular model shown below determine the structural formula and the chemical formula of jS-hydroxybutyric acid. (Color code black = carbon, white = hydrogen, red = oxygen.)... [Pg.78]
