Disease management overview

Prevention is in the first line of disease management, and the development and implementation of biosecurity strategies for fish diseases is exercised at national level and is embodied in the codes of practice of several international organisations such as the EU 2006 Directive and the OIE code of practice. Oidtmann et al. (2011) provide an overview of international and national biosecurity strategies in aquatic animal health. Preventative measures on the whole require more risk analysis and closer adherence than they currently enjoy so that they may become a higher priority. Unfortunately, the preventative measures most closely adhered to tend to be largely those most closely regulated. Some of these preventative measures as out-fined below are subjected to intensive research and are dealt with elsewhere in this book. 

An overview of animal welfare in organic farming by Vonne Lund is presented elsewhere (see Chapter 8). Animal welfare is reduced in conventional intensive housing systems because of high densities and lack of stimuli like straw, and this may lead to behavioural disturbances, injuries or some diseases. Livestock housing on organic farms should allow for the behavioural requirements of different farm animal species, facilitate efficient management, and use environmentally friendly construction materials and methods.

We present in this Chapter an overview on these orphan diseases from the perspective of opportunities offered by developments in lipidomics. The severity of these conditions, which are usually progressively debilating, become manageable by therapies that considerably delay the appearance of the consequent irreversible damage.

This book contains only subject matter covered at MU, and the chapters are authored by the experts who presented the material. Therefore, it is not a comprehensive treatise on IMD but rather a textbook on the most frequently encountered challenges in IMD nutrition. The book contains introductory chapters on nutrition and metabolism principles common to many metabolic disorders and disease-specific chapters on disorders of amino acid, fat, and carbohydrate metabolism. Appendix M contains an overview of nutrition management of IMD including those disorders for which there is not a specific chapter.
