However, hydrogen and carbon monoxide are not freely available in nature, i. e. they are not "primary fuels". A pre-fuel reformer must therefore convert any commercial fuel (gasoline, LPG, methane, naphtha, methanol, etc.) into a hydrogen-rich and/or carbon-monoxide-rich gaseous mixture to feed the fuelcell stack. Moreover, since fuel cells are electrochemical devices, they produce direct current an invertor must therefore be set after the stack, when a.c. current is needed. The resulting block-scheme of a complete FC generator is reported in Figure 5. The invertor subsystem is obviously not necessary for transportation applications.

In sim characterization of solid oxide fuel cells can be achieved through the use of a variety of techniques to produce direct information on the chemistry, strucmre, and mechanical properties of the material/cell of interest. Rapid developments in test equipment offer ever greater levels of detail, with many techniques providing submicron resolution, and below, of the critical processes affecting solid oxide fuelcell operation. Particularly the non-destructive nature of many of these techniques...

Hospitals are a fairly unique type of building in that they not only require a constant, non-interruptible, supply of electricity and heat but that the heat can be in the form of space heating or superheated steam for equipment sterilisation. Three companies, FuelCell Energy, MTU CFC and UTC are already active in this area with MTU CFC providing units with a high-temperature steam outlet which can be fed directly into a hospital s steam distribution network. 

FuelCell Energy is a manufacturer of MCFC power plants. Its core product is its direct fuel cell (DFC) which can range in size from 250 kW in series up to 2.4 MW. Outside of its native USA, it has distributor agreements in Japan and South Korea and supplies its stacks to the well-regarded German firm MTU CFC.
