Dill inhibition

In summary, the physiological control of silk protein conversion shows an ingenious balance of activating and inhibiting mechanisms that are dependent on composition and sequence arrangement (Krejchi et al., 1994). Denaturing effects observed in silks appear to be identical to those found in amyloid-forming proteins, and they principally alter the competitive outcome of the hydration of nonpolar and polar residues (Anfinsen, 1973 Dill, 1990 Dobson and Karplus, 1999 Kauzmann, 1959). The key differences to amyloids may lie in the hierarchical level of the structures (Muthukumar et al., 1997) involved in the assembly of silks compared to amyloids. [Pg.37]

The effect of commercial essential oils of celery, sage, dill, fennel, frankincense and nutmeg on rat skeletal muscles involved a contracture and inhibition of the twitch response to nerve stimulation, at final bath concentrations of 2 x 10-5 and 2 x 10"4 g/ml (Lis-Balchin and Hart, 1997). [Pg.234]

By the action of atrazine, substantially more nitrogen compounds are synthesised in rye seedlings, but CO fixation decreases, and, hence, the photosynthetic processes are inhibited. In atrazine-treated plants the quantity of insoluble photosynthesis remaining in the stem increases (Dill and Carter, 1972). [Pg.723]

Essentially all animals experience the threat of predation at some point in their life history (Lima Dill, 1990), and selection seems to favor either avoidance mechanisms that reduce the likelihood of contact or anti-predator mechanisms that reduce predator success after contact has occurred (Sih, 1985 Brodie, Formanowicz Brodie, 1991). Avoidance behavior can vary from elevated activity that is associated with seeking locations of comparative safety ( flight response) to inhibited activity that is associated with natural concealment or death feigning ( freeze response). Species (sea urchins, fishes) may show one or the other of these responses corresponding to their natural history (Parker Shulman, 1986 Smith, 1992, 1997), but some species (salamanders, snails) may shift between response types depending on the ecological context (Sih Kats, 1991 Turner, 1994, 1996). These studies indicate that the avoidance of a stimulus may appear to dissociate from (vary independently of) activity level. Thus an animal s activity level may reveal important information about the fine-tuning of behavioral avoidance in the natural context. [Pg.506]

In Britain, for example, Winston Churchill, Field Marshal Sir John Dill and J.B.S. Haldane were among those who were not inhibited by the moralistic case against gas warfare see W.S. Churchill to General Ismay for Chiefs of Staff Committee, 6 July 1944, PRO, PREM 3/89 The Use of Gas in Home Defence. Memorandum by CIGS , 15 June 1940, PRO, WO 193/732 J.B.S. Haldane, Callinicus - A Defence of Chemical Warfare (London Kegan Paul, 1925). [Pg.182]

Terpenes such as limonene (in peel oil of citrus fruits and aromatic oils of caraway, dill, etc.), myrecene (in nutmeg) and zingiberine (in ginger) are polyisoprene derivatives (see Figure 7.23). They inhibit isoprenylation of the V2 -ras oncogene product isoprenylation is essential for action of the ras protein, which is known to be associated with pancreatic cancer. [Pg.227]
