Water hydrolyzes diethyl phosphorochloridate [chloro-diethoxyphosphorus(V) oxide] readily but does not affect the diene. Alternatively, the reaction mixture can be processed by fractionation. Evaporation of the petroleum ether and fractionation of the residue through a 25-cm. x 2.2-cm. column of glass helices yields 170 g. (98.5%) of diethyl phosphorochloridate, b.p. 34-36°/0.2 mm., d 1.4210-1.4250 (the refractive index indicates that it contains 5-10% of the title compound), and 240-255 g. (90-96%) of l,2,3,4,5-pentachloro-5-ethylcyclo-pentadiene, b.p. 51-53°/0.2 mm., 1.5398. [Pg.91]

Solvent — The transition energy responsible for the main absorption band is dependent on the refractive index of the solvent, the transition energy being lower as the refractive index of the solvent increases. In other words, the values are similar in petroleum ether, hexane, and diethyl ether and much higher in benzene, toluene, and chlorinated solvents. Therefore, for comparison of the UV-Vis spectrum features, the same solvent should be used to obtain all carotenoid data. The second system investigated 101) (polystyrene macromonomer and perfluoro-alkyl acrylate) is also of great interest. The polymerization is carried out in trifluoro-benzene with AIBN as the initiator to a conversion of the order of 60 %. The graft copolymer formed is soluble in a number of solvents in which the poly(perfluoro-alkyl acrylate) backbone would be insoluble, e.g. in THF and diethyl ether. The easy formation of foams indicates the low surface energy which is characteristic of fluorinated polymers.
