A polymer with viscosity 2S0 N s/m is to be extruded using a vented screw extruder, with details as follows. Diameter of barrel D 75 mm. screw speed N = 40 rev/min, screw helix angle = 17.7", and screw flight width e = 7.5 mm. [Pg.287]

Screw Presses Figures 18-155 and 18-156 show screw presses. The rotating screw shown in Fig. 18-156 is of constant pitch and has a constant diameter of about 0.3 m (12 in). Pressure to squeeze juice from fruit placed in the press comes from restricting the opening at the end of the barrel with a hydraulically adjustable cone and by making the spindle of the screw thicker toward the discharge end. [Pg.1744]

As plastics can have quite different viscosities, they will tend to behave differently during extrusion. Fig. 4.3 shows some typical outputs possible with different plastics in extruders with a variety of barrel diameters. This diagram is to provide a general idea of the ranking of materials - actual outputs may vary 25% from those shown, depending on temperatures, screw speeds, etc. [Pg.247]

Example 5.2 In a plunger-type injection moulding machine the torpedo has a length of 40 mm, a diameter of 23 mm and is supported by three spiders. If, during moulding of polythene at ITO C, the plunger moves forward at a speed of 13 mm/s, estimate the pressure drop along the torpedo and the shear force on the spiders. The barrel diameter is 25 mm. [Pg.376]

The amino acid compositions and sequences of the /3-strands in porin proteins are novel. Polar and nonpolar residues alternate along the /3-strands, with polar residues facing the central pore or cavity of the barrel and nonpolar residues facing out from the barrel where they can interact with the hydrophobic lipid milieu of the membrane. The smallest diameter of the porin channel is about 5 A. Thus, a maltodextrin polymer (composed of two or more glucose units) must pass through the porin in an extended conformation (like a spaghetti strand). [Pg.274]

The standard injection molding machine used had a screw diameter of 30 mm and the aspect ratio of 23.70. The barrel temperature profile was 270, 280, 290, and 295°C. The mold temperature was about 90°C. The injection molded tensile samples were processed according to the CAMPUS specification (Computer Aided Materials Preselection by Uniform Standards) [24] and DIN 53455 Form 3. To obtain the different flow conditions, four groups of samples were injection molded by varying melt... [Pg.691]

Concentricity Term to describe two circles or cylindrical shapes having a common center and common axis, such as the inside or outside diameters of a barrel or outside diameters of the surface and bearing surfaces of a screw. Deviation from concentricity is referred to as runout. Also refers to the relationship of all inside dimensions to all outside dimensions usually expressed in thousands of inch or millimeter FIM (full indicator movement). Deviation from concentricity is usually referred to as a runout. The concentricity should allow for the maximum part tolerance. The geometry of the part should help indicate the tolerance applied. [Pg.633]

A new polymer was developed by the polymer scientists in a company. A sample has been provided to the process development laboratory to determine the viscosity of the polymer as a function of shear rate and temperature. The instrument available is an old capillary rheometer. The piston has a diameter of 9.525 mm, and a series of capillaries that fit the rheometer barrel have a diameter of 2.54 mm and lengths of 25.4, 50.8, 76.2, and 101.6 mm. The rheometer temperature was set at 270 °C. Shear viscosity data are needed to estimate process performance. [Pg.85]

Grooved bore extruders are common on European extruders up to barrel diameters of about 120 mm and on some applications up to 150 mm diameter [44]. For a 60 mm diameter machine, the maximum feed channel depth for a PP resin application is about 5 mm and 6 mm for HDPE resin applications channel depths are not much larger than this for larger diameter machines. A version of this free helix device was also constructed that had a recycle system such that there was essentially no pressure change from the exit to the entrance of the extruder, as shown in Fig. 7.4. That device had a barrel diameter of 58 mm and it was used to measure the effect of the different parts of the screw on the extruder performance where pressure gradients could he imposed [5], The devices shown in Figs. 7.3 and 7.4 could be operated as a conventional extruder if hoth core and helix elements were driven at the same angular velocity with the barrel stationary. In another mode, only the helix was rotated in the same direction as the screw had been while the core and barrel were stationary. And finally the screw core was rotated in the same or different direction as the screw and the helix and barrel were stationary. [Pg.251]
