Independent protection layer An IPL is a device, system, or action that is capable of preventing a hazard scenario from proceeding to the undesired consequence regardless of the initiating cause occurrence (or its consequences) or the failure of any other protection layer. [Pg.103]

Layers of protection—a concept whereby several different devices, systems, or actions are provided to reduce the likelihood and severity of an undesirable event. [Pg.49]

Safeguard— Any device, system, or action that would likely interrupt the chain of events following an initiating event or that would mitigate the consequences. [Pg.439]

It is useful to be able to compare the relative costs of a typical magnetic device system with a water treatment chemical program (scale, corrosion, and dispersion of sludges only). Although selling prices may vary considerably across the competitive market spectrum and will also tend to rise over the years, a very basic exercise, as discussed below and shown in Table 3.3, will serve to provide some comparison. [Pg.83]

The following process is applicable for changes to any component of computer technology that performs functions on regulated products, including hardware, peripheral devices, system software and utilities, application software, documentation, and communications hardware and software. These components can be either purchased from an external supplier or developed in house by the company or its designee. [Pg.98]

A number of pharmaceutical companies are developing delivery systems for the delivery of macromolecules such as insulin. For example, The Inhale device system effectively disperses fine particles (which require a dispersion force far stronger than can be generated by a patient s inspiration) it also creates a stationary cloud to... [Pg.271]

In a batch slurry reactor, the liquid-solid mass-transfer coefficient can be measured by dissolving a sparingly soluble solid in liquid. The concentration of dissolved solid in liquid (Bt) can be measured as a function of time, preferably by a continuous analytical device. Systems such as the dissolution of benzoic acid, jS-naphthol, naphthalene, or KMn04 in water can be used. A plot of B( as a function of time and the slope of such plot at time t = 0 can give ks as... [Pg.182]

The name comes from the town of Strontian in Scotland and was given to the element by Thomas Hope (1766-1844). There are many claims for the original discovery of strontium. William Cruikshank, in 1787, and Adair Crawford, in 1790, both examined strontianite (SrC03) and recognized that it had unique properties. Thomas Hope noted an unknown earth in 1791. Martin Klaproth presented a paper on a number of strontium compounds in 1793 and 1794. Richard Kirwan (1733-1812) examined a number of strontium compounds and presented his findings in 1794. It was Davy who isolated strontium metal, in 1808. Strontium does not occur in pure form in nature but is found in small quantities in many places. Some forms of strontium are radioactive, particularly 90Sr, which has been found in nuclear fallout. It can also be used in SNAP devices (Systems for Nuclear Auxiliary Power) as a power source. The main commercial use of strontium is in the glass of color television picture tubes. [Pg.126]
