Spectrographic analysis allows accurate, rapid measurements of many of the elements present in lubricating oil. These elements are generally classified as wear metals, contaminates, or additives. Some elements can be listed in more than one of these classifications. Standard lubricating oil analysis does not attempt to determine the specific failure modes of developing machine-train problems. Therefore, additional techniques must be used as part of a comprehensive predictive maintenance program.

A possible strategy is to carry a spare PLC and one each of the I/O cards. This is not an expensive option as the spare PLC can donble np as a development machine. 

Increased demands on the keeping qualities of butter require careful construction, operation, and cleaning of the milk- and cream-processing equipment, as well as research to develop machines that will ensure butter production and packing under conditions without contamination and air admixture. It has been demonstrated that butter produced under closed conditions has a better keeping quality than butter produced in open systems (83).

Commercial manufacture of tablets is performed almost exclusively on rotary tablet machines due to their higher output. Machines are available with anything from 4 stations for a development machine to 79 stations for the largest production machines. All such machines operate using virtually identical principles that are represented in Figure 11.17. 

Two other computer facilities are a data collection system which monitors remotely located data acquisition and experiment-control computers via asynchronous serial lines and the two Evans and Sutherland LDS-1 interactive graphics terminals. A PDP 10 included in the network configuration as an alternate file transport concentrator and auxiliary network development machine also performs the role of worker computer with the Evans and Sutherland display equipment. Other subnetworks have been designed for inclusion in the Octopus network to direct the on-line operation of LLL high-speed printer and microfilm recorder output facilities, to administer a second, expanded television monitor system providing 256 channels of video input for distribution to 512 additional monitors, and to control a CDC on-line tape library of 8.7 x 10 bits scheduled for delivery in 1975. The C-sample (industrialization phase) should be able to be implemented and compatible in the target environment, for example, tolerances of supplier parts or accepted tolerances of product parts. Resulting tolerance or tolerance-chains from the production of assembled parts should be secured within specified limits. Therefore, it is often required that the C-samples are already produced on series development machines or at least by using tools for series production. 

During a series of studies undertaken in UK coal mining it became apparent that the field of vision of drivers on a range of underground machines was severely restricted. An example (taken from Simpson, 1998b) of the extent of restricted vision on a development machine is shown in Figure 3.5.
