Due to the uncertainty involved in the evaluation of new products, financial analysis tools that consider risks and opportunities are more appropriate and valuable than deterministic approaches. These new approaches to project financial evaluation that consider imcertainty include options analysis and Monte Carlo simulation. Due to their proactive handling of uncertainty, these tools can more accurately calculate the risks and opportunities of a new product concept. In the standard theory of quantum mechanics, two kinds of evolution processes are introduced, which are qualitatively different from each other. One is the spontaneous process, which is a reactive (unitary) dynamical process and is described by the Heisenberg or Schrodinger equation in an equivalent manner. The other is the measurement process, which is irreversible and described by the von Neumann projection postulate [26], which is the rigorous mathematical form of the reduction of the wave packet principle. The former process is deterministic and is uniquely described, while the latter process is essentially probabilistic and implies the statistical nature of quantum mechanics. [Pg.47]

A totally different approach respects the idea that a Virtual Reality application that has basically the same state of its domain objects will render the same scene, respectively. It is therefore sufficient to distribute the state of the domain objects to render the same scene. In a multi-screen environment, the camera on the virtual scene has to be adapted to the layout of your projection system. This is a very common approach and is followed more or less, e.g., by approaches such as ViSTA or NetJuggler [978]. It is called the master-slave, or mirrored application paradigm, as all slave nodes run the same application and all user input is distributed from the master node to the slave nodes. All input events are replayed in the slave nodes and as a consequence, for deterministic environments, the state of the domain objects is sjmchronized on all slave nodes which results in the same state for the visualization. The master machine, just like the client machine in the client-server approach, does all the user input dispatching, but as a contrast to the client-server model, a master machine can be part of the rendering environment. This is a consequence from the fact that all nodes in this setup merely must provide the same graphical and computational resources, as all calculate the application state in parallel. [Pg.290]

However, the above cash flow analysis is deterministic. Therefore, a more realistic treatment should include some elements of risk analysis. This consists of the Identification, quantification, evaluation and acceptance of risks. The subject concerns more the management of projects and therefore it is out of the scope of this book. Projections are therefore relatively easUy obtained, but the following reconstruction stage is more challenging. Formally this involves the inverse Radon transform [14, 15] - computing the three-dimensional spectrum S(Fi,F2J 3) starting from all the recorded projections. Inverse problems of this kind are notoriously tricky to solve but an NMR spectrum is a favourable case because the target spectrum comprises discrete resonances sparsely distributed in three dimensions rather than a continuum of absorption. There are two general approaches to this problem -deterministic and statistical [16]. [Pg.7]

An entirely different approach to reconstmction [16] is to find a model of the two-dimensional spectrum S(Fi,F2) that is compatible with all the measured projection traces. In principle the iteration could start with an arbitrary or completely featureless model (zero intensity at every pixel), but usually it is better to employ some prior knowledge . In the vicinity of a correlation peak it is clear that there must be some correlation between the intensities of adjacent pixels. Prior knowledge may take the form of assumptions about Uneshapes or the expected number of resonances in the two-dimensional spectrum, or it might exploit hard evidence from an earlier deterministic scheme. At the most primitive level, where each pixel in the S(Fi,F2) plane is fitted independently, these statistical programs converge very slowly, but there is much to be gained by restricting the variable parameters to... [Pg.14]

Whilst this was theoretically possible in the past, it may now be achieved in a manner that uses standard products and tools and is therefore easier and less expensive to validate. The use of common databases and engineering tools also means that project costs may actually be reduced when an integrated approach is taken. Each work package in the WBS is decomposed into the activities required to complete its predefined scope. A list of activities is constructed and the time to complete each activity is estimated. Estimates can be deterministic (point estimates) or stochastic (distributions). Precedence relations among activities are defined, and a model such as a Gantt chart, activity on arc (AOA), or activity on nodes (AON) network is constructed (Shtub et al. 1994). An initial schedule is developed based on the model. This unconstrained schedule is a basis for estimating required resources and cash.
