The analysis of surface-active anions comprises the determination of simple aromatic sulfonic acids, hydrotropes (toluene, cumene, and xylene sulfonates), alkane- and alkene sulfonates, fatty alcohol ether sulfates, alkylbenzene sulfonates, and a-sulfofatty acid methyl esters. Many of these compounds are relevant predominantly in the detergent and cleansing industry. [Pg.271]

Malik presented a paper on multifunctional surfactants [27]. Included were commercial-grade blends of C12 SME/sulfonated fatty acid and C13.6 SME/sul-fonated fatty acid. These products were compared to traditional industry hydrotropes as well as to other specialty surfactants. The C12 and C13.6 SME/acids are very effective hydrotropes as compared to SXS [28] (Fig. 12). Later in this chapter the detergent and hydrotropic properties of SMEs will be used in formulations. [Pg.127]

Phosphate esters possess strong tolerance to electrolytes and alkalis. Their wetting properties are independent of the pH and, therefore, are used as surfactant components in both alkaline and acid cleaners (5). Their detergent properties are considered equal to nonionic surfactants, and they have excellent temperature stability. In their acid form, phosphate esters are moderately strong acids and, when neutralized to pH 5-8, have low order of toxicity. Phosphate esters are considered to be hydrotrope agents and are biodegradable. [Pg.3019]
