Life safety addresses construction, protection and occupancy features in buildings necessary to minimize danger to life from fire, including smoke, fumes, or panic. NFPA 101, The Life Safety Code, has been adopted by many jurisdictions. The requirements of NFPA 101 are not intended for property protection, but are designed for life safety. There may be some life safety benefits that are achieved from the property protection features provided, or vice versa. [Pg.128]

The principles of good design for fire safety are as applicable to composites as to other construction materials. The specific design requirements must be carefully considered, the properties of the materials taken into account and engineering judgement applied. [Pg.403]

Figure 3 shows the responsibilities of the various agencies involved in safety in Ontario. It designates the two main thrusts for construction safety. One thrust is the legislative, and the other is the self-regulative approach. [Pg.48]

The development and improvement of scientific-technical level of NDT and TD means for safety issues is connected with the necessity to find additional investments that must be taken into account at the stage of new technogenic objects designing, when solving new arising problems in social, economic, ecological and medical safety. It is not accidental, that the expenses for safe nuclear power plants operation cover 50% of total sum for construction work capital investments. That is why the investments for NDT and TD have to cover 10% of total amount for development and manufacturing of any product. [Pg.915]

Pressure Relief Valves Definitions for pressure relief valves, relief valves, pilot-operated pressure relief valves and safety v alves, are found in the ASVIE Boiler and Pressure Assel Code, Section Division 1, Rules for Construction of Pressure Assels, Paragraphs UC-125 and UC-126, The pressure-relief valve is an automatic pressure relieving device designed to open when normal conditions are exceeded and to close again when normal conditions are restored. Within this class there are relief valves, pilot operated pressure relief valves, and safety valves. [Pg.792]

Review design and construction changes for safety (follow Management of Change procedures). [Pg.85]

Vessels designed for microwave-assisted SPOS must fulfill several require-menfs because of fhe harsh conditions (i.e., high temperatures and pressures) usually associated with microwave heating. Open vessels are often impractical because of the possible loss of solvent and/or volatile reagents during the heating process. However, in cases where a volatile byproduct inhibits a reaction, their use may be superior over closed systems. A sealed vessel retains the solvents and reagents, but must be sturdily constructed to avoid the obvious safety implications due to the buildup of pressure. [Pg.90]

As with any engineering design, the ET cover should be designed with safety factors because both design and construction introduce uncertainty regarding performance. Some safety factor concerns are similar between ET covers and conventional covers. However, control of water flow into the waste requires new safety factor considerations for the ET cover, including the following ... [Pg.1072]

Pre-start-up Safety Review (PSSR) approval of the SIS establishes the point where the SIS design and construction is considered complete. All documentation should be formally updated to as-built status, incorporating any modifications made since the last formal drawing or document revision. Once the PSSR has approved the SIS for process unit start-up, formal management of change procedures should be followed to address proposed modification to the SIS or its associated documentation. Any deviation from the approved design basis should be reviewed and approved by appropriate parties prior to change implementation. [Pg.104]
