Derusting

The vast majority of acid-based cleaning products are for the removal of scale, rust and other oxide films (see Section 11.2). These products may contain solvents and surfactants to degrease and derust simultaneously.

Oily/rusty surfaces that need cleaning can be simultaneously deoiled and derusted by employing a hot, alkaline gluconate program (5% caustic, 2% sodium gluconate) with 0.2% anionic or nonionic surfactant.

Each component has a specific function. The Metasilicate will increase paint stripping efficiency provided sufficient alkalinity is present. The Gluconate or Glucoheptonate provide the derusting. Burco TME and Burco ADS-100 provide removal and dispersion of particulate soils while the Dodecylbenzenesulfonate adds wetting and oily soil detergency. Each component can be adjusted according to the improvement needed. 

Maintenance of bombs(maintaining them in serv-icable condition for immediate use) includes derusting, repainting and removal of exudate from the bombs and the floor of magazines. Removal of exudate from the floor is done by pouring hot water over it and scrubbing. When a comparatively small amt of exudate is present on the exterior of bombs, it can be removed with acetone and the bombs considered suitable for issue. Where ex-cessibe exudate is present on the exterior of bombs, the lots involved should be reported to the Ordnance Ammunition Command, Joliet, 111 and held for disposition... 

RELATE GH-50 is useful in caustic bottle washing, alkaline cleaning descaling and derusting of metals, as a cement additive and in the caustic treatment of textiles. 

Use Pharmaceutical and food products, cleaning and pickling metals, sequestrant, cleansers for bottle washing, paint strippers, alkaline derusters, catalyst in textile printing (ammonium salt). 

Use In derusting and descaling processes for metal concrete admixtures to retard set and reduce water required textile applications aluminum etching and caustic bottle washing. 

Choice of an appropiate surface treatment and a suitable primer are important because adhesion to the substrates presents difficulties [11.37]. Primers based on modified alkyd resins or two-pack epoxy-resins for derusted ferrous metals mainly contain zinc phosphate and zinc OKide as corrosion protection pigments. Nonferrous metals are first washed with an ammoniacal wetting agent before applying the primer that contains a binder based on synthetic resins (e.g., PVC copolymers, chlorinated rubber) which ensure good adhesion to the substrate. The same primer must be used on zinc or galvanized surfaces because the use of alkyd resins causes embrittlement [11.38] The primed surfaces are largely topcoated with alkyd resin systems.
