Derrick materials

In addition to withstanding some minimum load or loads (sections titled Load Capacities and Design Specifications ), derricks and masts that satisfy API standards must also satisfy certain requirements regarding materials, allowable stresses, wind, dynamic loading, earthquakes and extremes of temperature.

After the charge has been exhausted, the top of the still may be taken off immediately and the spent material removed in any convenient manner. The practice of loading and discharging the still by means of either a derrick or a block and tackle greatly reduces the labor and saves much time. The spent material is often returned to the field as fertilizer sometimes it may be used for fuel. In the commercial distillation of peppermint the spent herb is dried and used for stock fodder. Economics of this nature reduce production costs.

The same material is covered for cranes and derricks. Loads and proper lifting procedures are also covered. Required inspections are outlined and procedures to ensure that a non-functioning machine is marked and safe. 

Subpart N provides provisions for cranes, derricks, hoists, helicopters, conveyors, and aerial lifts. This subpart delimits many common safety requirements for material-handling equipment and reinforces the need to follow the manufacturer s requirements regarding load capacities, speed limits, special hazards, and unique equipment characteristics. A competent person must inspect all cranes and derricks before daily use and a thorough inspection must be accomplished annually by an OSHA-recognized qualified person. A record must be maintained of that inspection for each piece of hoisting eqnipment.
