These data, taken together, demonstrate that topical application of rifaximin represents an effective and safe treatment of pyogenic skin infections. An additional application of this dermatological formulation would be infection prophylaxis in superficial skin wounds, particularly when used with a dressing that occludes the wound. Prophylactic topical antibiotic use makes particular sense for wounds in which the risk of infection is high, such as those that are likely to be contaminated (accidental wounds, lacerations, abrasions, and burns). Because all traumatic wounds should be considered contaminated, topical antibiotics are a logical measure to prevent wound...

Benzofuran 213 has been patented for use as a UV absorber in cosmetics and as a UV stabilizer in plastics <1997USP5665334>. A wide range of 3-substituted phthalides, for example, 214, and 3-alkylidene phthalides 215, are used in dermatological formulations to protect dibenzoylmethane compounds in the compositions from UV radiation <2003FRP2827509>.

Hypersensitivity occurs about four times more often after topical than after oral use (45). In fact, there has been a continuous increase in chloramphenicol hypersensitivity, owing to the use of dermatological formulations (46). Allergic contact dermatitis and macular or vesicular skin rashes are usually limited to skin areas previously exposed to the drug. Contact conjunctivitis has also been reported. 

Silver compounds are still used in medicine to a limited extent, notably in dermatological formulations, nose-drops. 

Many modern dermatological formulations are washable oil-in-water systems. Simple aqueous lotions are also used as they have a cooling effect on the skin. Ointments are used for the application of insoluble or oil-soluble medicaments and leave a greasy film on the skin, inhibiting loss of moisture and encouraging the hydration of the keratin layer. Aqueous creams combine the characteristics of the lotions and ointments. A classification of semisolid bases is given in Fig. 9.24.
