Cutaneous reactions associated with quinidine include morbilliform, scalatini-form, and urticarial eruptions (Shatter and Halpern 1958). A case of exfoliative dermatitis has been reported (Taylor and Potashnick 1951), but the patient in addition to taking quinidine was also taking penicillin, codeine sulphate, diphenhydramine, and meperidine. The causal relationship implicating quinidine was established by withdrawing the individual drugs and demonstrating clinical exacerbation with quinidine. [Pg.396]

Occupational quinidine contact dermatitis has also been reported (Fernstrom 1965). The patient was an employee of a pharmaceutical company and was required to grind drugs into a powder. A positive patch test to crystals of quinidine sulphate confirmed the already strong clinical evidence. [Pg.397]

Besides irritant dermatitis to quinine, which seems to be common in the pharmaceutical industry, contact allergic reactions have also been reported (Hardie et al. 1978). Notwithstanding their structural similarity to quinine and quinidine - the former is the /evo-isomer and the latter the dextro-isomer - they do not cross-react. They are a clear example of stereoisomer specificity. [Pg.1046]
