Derivative devices

As for spatial causative factors, however, there is little or no evidence that any special form of spatial format or spatially congruent feedback is a necessary condition for the primary elaboration of codes for order. With humans subjects, of course, all one can say is that the experimental tasks have eliminated conventionalized forms of spatial support. Yet spatially derived devices could well be imported by the subject and used in the mind s eye. With our simian subjects, ignorant of social and cultural conventions that utilize spatial layouts, this contention is difficult to sustain. The basis for such organization in all primates, we would contend, is temporal in nature, and can be tracked through the trajectories for private individual knowledge growth in evolution and development. [Pg.275]

Derivation devices can also be Bourdon tubes or capillary tubes closed at one end. When the fluid is pressurized the tube tends to uncoil. Spring-loaded bellows give good pulse damping but can be used only in a narrow pressure range. [Pg.30]

Over the years the quality of commercially available derivative devices has improved. At present, practically all of the new spectrophotometers are commercially fitted with at least second-order derivative systems, but most can go up to the fourth order, and some even up to the sixth or ninth order. This makes it possible to apply the HODS technique not only in research laboratories, but also in routine operations. [Pg.3]

The invention of the transistor by Bardeen, Brattain, and Shockley in 1947, was of the utmost importance for electronic circuits. This active electronic structural member requires no heating current, as is the case for electronic tubes, and it is much smaller and also much cheaper. In the 1960s, the old electronic valve was also replaced in derivative devices (see Fig. 3-8). This circuit is not yet perfect, because the differentiator and the amplifier are not independent of each other. Better results can be obtained if the amplifier has a high-resistance input, as realized by a field-effect transistor (see Fig. 3-9). [Pg.52]

A further step in this direction is to place a capacitor parallel to the resistor R2 (Fig. 3-36). If this differentiator is combined with a low-pass filter and an impedance converter, we have an effective network (Fig. 3-37) with which higher-order derivative devices can also be constructed. [Pg.64]

In considering whether to use or buy an apparatus which has integrated a derivative device, or which is fitted with an analog device or connected with a computer and the suitable software, it is crucial to check the quality of the results before making a decision. Unfortunately, not all derivative modules or all softwares offered are specially suited for generating higher-order derivatives of high quality. [Pg.104]

Often manufacturers and salespeople demonstrate the effectivity of derivative devices on spectra of holmium glass filters by taking the steepest peaks. Frankly speaking, this test is meaningless, because differentiation of steep peaks is unnecessary the peaks are resolved sufficiently. Therefore, for checking the resolution potential the holmium peak between 430 and 470 nm (Amax 447.0, Fig. 4-2 a) is not a valid example. But the maxima at 418.5, 537.5 or 636.5 nm (Fig. 4-2b, c and d) can be used. The signal at 447 nm may only be taken to estimate the AA shift. [Pg.104]

In the process of studying higher-order derivatives, four substances proved especially suitable for testing the quality of derivative devices. [Pg.106]

The data of individual measurements fluctuate irregularly around an effective value (random errors). These deviations are caused by the noise of the signal source. The absolute value of the noise, which depends on different experimental conditions, can be estimated from the deviations of the base line. In spectroscopy it is also possible to use the spectra of optical attenuators, e.g., of a sieve or a grey filter. Then the noise must be minimized by optimizing the on-line low-pass output filter of the apparatus or the gate filter of the derivative device. The dimension of the noise is given in [mm]. [Pg.128]

Figure 1. shows the measured phase differenee derived using equation (6). A close match between the three sets of data points can be seen. Small jumps in the phase delay at 5tt, 3tt and most noticeably at tt are the result of the mathematical analysis used. As the cell is rotated such that tlie optical axis of the crystal structure runs parallel to the angle of polarisation, the cell acts as a phase-only modulator, and the voltage induced refractive index change no longer provides rotation of polarisation. This is desirable as ultimately the device is to be introduced to an interferometer, and any differing polarisations induced in the beams of such a device results in lower intensity modulation. [Pg.682]

The high-field output of laser devices allows for a wide variety of nonlinear interactions [17] between tire radiation field and tire matter. Many of tire initial relationships can be derived using engineering principles by simply expanding tire media polarizability in a Taylor series in powers of tire electric field ... [Pg.2863]

The word laser is an acronym derived from light amplification by the stimulated emission of radiation . If the light concerned is in the microwave region then the alternative acronym maser is often used. Although the first such device to be constructed was the ammonia maser in 1954 it is the lasers made subsequently which operate in the infrared, visible or ultraviolet regions of the spectrum which have made a greater impact. [Pg.337]

Polyaniline (PANI) can be formed by electrochemical oxidation of aniline in aqueous acid, or by polymerization of aniline using an aqueous solution of ammonium thiosulfate and hydrochloric acid. This polymer is finding increasing use as a "transparent electrode" in semiconducting devices. To improve processibiHty, a large number of substituted polyanilines have been prepared. The sulfonated form of PANI is water soluble, and can be prepared by treatment of PANI with fuming sulfuric acid (31). A variety of other soluble substituted AJ-alkylsulfonic acid self-doped derivatives have been synthesized that possess moderate conductivity and allow facile preparation of spincoated thin films (32). [Pg.242]

External stimulus flow meters are generally electrical in nature. These devices derive their signal from the interaction of the fluid motion with some external stimulus such as a magnetic field, laser energy, an ultrasonic beam, or a radioactive tracer. [Pg.64]

Nonlinear Optical Devices. A transparent, optically active, sol—gel-derived organic—inorganic glass has been synthesized (68). This hybrid consists of a 2,4-dinitroaminophenylpropyl-triethoxysilane covalently bound to a siUcon alkoxide-derived siUca network. This hybrid exhibits a strong electric field-induced second harmonic signal and showed no signs of crystallization. [Pg.331]

The hand-held comparative Brinell tester is the most portable device. With this device a hammer blow is substituted for the static load which is transmitted first through a standard bar of known hardness and then through the indenter into the workpiece. The indentations in both the standard bar and the workpiece are measured and from the ratio of the diameters the HBN is derived. The loss in accuracy is made up for by the exceUent portabUity. [Pg.464]
