Barr completed a B.Sc. in chemistry at Bedford in 1927, and was then awarded a 3-year grant from the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research (DSIR) to work towards her Ph.D. on molten salt electrolysis under James Spencer. However, Barr terminated her research in 1928 with an M.Sc. [Pg.495]

Gordon s status as a leading wood chemist was recognized by various administrative appointments, the first as director of the Chemistry Division of the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research (DSIR), the equivalent of Canada s National Research Council or Australia s Commonwealth Scientihc and Industrial Research Organization (CSIRO). He held this position from 1981 until the dismantling of DSIR in 1992. The Chemistry Division was the largest division in DSIR, with a very diverse range of activities. [Pg.635]

Du Bois-Reymond neither made concrete suggestions like Waser, nor did he name Wells as his source. It seems unlikely that his essay was even known to Haber or Schmidt-Ott, but Haber could have seen the same report in Nature as du Bois-Reymond on British scientific developments which, despite the war, still found its way into German libraries. In a surprisingly open manner. Nature had reported on plans in Britain. One could read how, in 1915, ideas that had been tossed around since the beginning of the war were being consolidated into a centralized guidance of science, presaging the establishment of a new Department of Scientific and Industrial Research (DSIR) in 1916. ... [Pg.184]

In 1906, Judd was appointed as Lecturer in Chemistry and Physics at Goldsmiths College. She relinquished the position in 1916, returning to IC to undertake war work for the Silk Institute, silk being a highly important material in the war, particularly for the envelopes of observation balloons. With the war ended, she obtained a post as Researcher for the Food Investigation Board of the Department for Scientific and Industrial Research (DSIR). Two publications resulted from her studies, one in 1919 and the other in 1920. [Pg.463]

Grants are made by the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research to assist research workers at universities, sometimes paid to the individual but more often to the institution at which he is working. Postgraduate studentships are also available for training in methods of research or for advanced courses. Aimual pamphlets DSIR Research Grants and DSIR Studentships and Fellowships can be obtained through HMSO or from the Department (State House, High Holborn, London, W.C.l). [Pg.11]
