Deionization, of water

Water is often deionized using an ion exchange (Section 11.6) cartridge to remove hardness minerals. Such deionization of water is often done in conjunction with distillation, such that the water is both deionized and distilled prior to use. Also, if the water is contaminated with organics, or other low boiling substances, a charcoal filter cartridge is often used as well.

Ion-exchange chromatography Has a wide range of uses in the food industry, medicine and life and health sciences. This technique has been extensively used in the food industry as a quality control measure and to detect contamination with metals and organic acids. Another important use of this method is in the purification of blood products such as human albumin, growth factors and enzymes. Perhaps the most common application of this technique is the deionization of water and water softening/purification. 

A high-capacity, weak-base anion-exchange resin has been prepared by suspension polymerization of methacrylic acid with DVB followed by the amination of the beads with an alkylamine. Ion-exchange chromatography is a separation method based on the exchanging of ions in a solution with ions of the same charge present in a porous insoluble solid. The method is used for the deionization of water [1,2], It is often employed for the separation and identihcation of the rare earth and transuranium elements [2], Additionally, ion-exchange chromatography is also used in clinical laboratories for the automated separation and analysis of amino acids and other physiologically important amines used for pharmaceutical purposes [3],... 

An important application of ion-selective membranes is deionization of water and of colloidal solutions. If the vessel containing saline solution is separated into three parts by anionic (Fig. V-15, left side) and cationic (Fig. V-15, right side ) diaphragms, then by placing anode into the left compartment, cathode into the right compartment, and by passing the electric current, one may remove ions from solution in the middle compartment.

Two-bed deionization of water is widely practiced. Such systems generally use a strong-acid cation exchange followed by either a weak-base or a strong-base anion exchanger. Reactions similar to equations...
