Normal biochemical events surrounding the maintenance and functions of the nervous system centers around energy metabolism, biosynthesis of macromolecules, and neurotransmitter synthesis, storage, release, uptake, and degradation. Measurement of these events is complicated by the sequenced nature of the components of the nervous system and the transient and labile nature of the moieties involved. Use of measurements of alterations in these functions as indicators of neurotoxicity is further complicated by our lack of a complete understanding of the normal operation of these systems and by the multitude of day-to-day occurrences (such as diurnal cycle, diet, temperature, age, sex, and endocrine status) which are constantly modulating the baseline system. For detailed discussions of these difficulties, the reader is advised to see Damstra and Bondy (1980, 1982). [Pg.756]

Wurtz-synthesized PMPS was selected as the material to be studied when subjected to cathodoluminescence (CL).98 The CL method of the study of PMPS is based on the measurement of CL intensity of emitted light after its passage through the specimen, as shown in Figure 20. For the PMPS degradation measurements, electron beam energy of 10k eV was used. The PL emission spectrum consists of two emission bands. The maximum of the... [Pg.233]

From paper by [12], Degradation measured by polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis from radiolabeled oligos. Complete degradation within lOmin (-1--I--t-) complete degradation within 60min (-t-f) some degradation observed but not complete in 60 min (-(-) no degradation products over 60 min (-). This is consistent with other studies [13]. [Pg.210]

Incubation and Degradation Measurements. Radiolabeled or unlabeled compounds were dissolved in acetone and added to 60 ml of estuarine or phosphate-buffered distilled water (pH 7.7 0.2 16 nlM) in 150 ml quartz flasks (Quartz Scientific, Inc.). Acetone was at a final concentration of 1 x 10 and there was no photosensitization of the compounds by acetone in distilled water. These flasks allow more than 852 transmission of light of wavelength longer than 260 nm. Approximately 0.1 ci of the selected compound was added to each flask. The final concentration of each compound in the flasks was adjusted to 25 pg L by the addition of unlabeled compound. [Pg.29]

Viscosity of dilute solutions. A capillary viscometer (Cannon-Manning semimicro, No. 100) was used for determination of the intrinsic viscosity and for study of enzymatic degradation. Measurements were carried at 37 C. For the latter study specific fluidities, the reciprocal of specific viscosity, were plotted against reaction time. With random degradation of a chain polymer a straight line is obtained by this plotting, and the slope of the line is proportional to the reaction rate constant (4). [Pg.215]
