Deformation seepage

It was found that the subsidence of the ground surface is a result of coupled effects between groundwater flow and rock/soil deformation, with the seepage and consolidation affected by changes in rock/soil porosity and permeability. Numerical modelling using coupled flow-deformation models become necessary. [Pg.42]

In principle all the THMC processes may be involved in the geotechnical and geo-environmental problems. However, to simplify the problem for solution, only the major processes are considered for a particular problem. For example, the dam foundation problems are practically dominated by the coupled HM processes. The objectives of the solution are the interactions between the foundation stresses and deformation (the mechanical process), and the seepage pressure and flow rate (hydraulic process). Only in some special cases the thermal and/or chemical processes may also be involved, say, for dams built in cold region or on rock foundation of high solubility. [Pg.82]

By the results of the seepage analysis we understand that the permeability coefficient is drastically changed as the void space is reduced, and this fact affects the long-term deformation (i.e., consolidation) behavior strongly. [Pg.464]

It is a well-established fact that the description of the interaction between coal/rock mass and gas in the gas leak flow system is difficult. Nonetheless, the problem of gas leak flow must be studied for the sake of coal mining safety and gas drainage in the multi-coal-seam. In this study the gas leak flow systems for coupled coal/rock mass deformation and gas seepage in double coal seams are studied with the principle of rock mechanics and coal gas seepage. [Pg.623]

Abstract Accidents of some arch dams show that dam failures are mainly caused by crack or failure of their foundation rocks, which are directly related to water seepage in the rock. This kind of fluid-rock interaction has an important influence on deformation and stress characters of the dam-rock system. In this paper, the stress and flow fields of dams and their foundation rocks are studied as a coupled system, using visco-elastic constitutive models and finite element solution method. The developed models and FEM technique were applied for analysing the continuous displacement of the 13 dam section of the Longyangxia Dam, and the calculated results agree well with the measured ones. [Pg.753]

From the point of the structural plane deformation, and through the JRC and JMC parameters, the relation between permeability and the 3D stresses and the rock surface has been derived, which could be more exactly and physically. This model is consistent with the actual seepage conditions. [Pg.932]

Drains of sand and/or gravel installed beneath or within the dam also afford seepage control. Because of their broad base, earth dams impose much lower stresses on the foundation materials than concrete dams. Furthermore, they can accommodate deformation such as that due to settlement more readily. As a consequence, earth dams have been constructed on a great variety of foundations ranging from weak unconsolidated stream or glacial deposits to high-strength rocks. [Pg.510]
