ASTM procedures for measuring flexural modulus, as well as the criteria to satisfy the ASTM D 790 requirements on the limiting values of deflection, that is, 5% strain limit at midspan in the outer surface of boards, were described in the preceding section of this chapter (see Tables 7.2, 7.3, and 7.5). 

Limiting values for deflection at 4-pt load (1/3-span load) were described above, and it was shown that the maximum strain in the outer surface (i.e., strain at break) when composite deck boards are tested is typically below 3%, as it is prescribed by ASTM D 6109 (see Tables 7.9 and 7.10). 

The modulus of elasticity in flexure is defined in an analogous way to the tensile and compressive tests, with the strains of 0.05% and 0.25"/o again taken as the limiting values between which it is determined. This places very severe constraints on the accuracy of the test equipment and the test piece itself. For the standard test piece. 0.05% strain corresponds to a deflection of the outer surface of only 0.08 mm from its starting point. This does not make much allowance for any backlash in the test jig. lack of flatness in the test piece, or lack of alignment in any of the three loading bars.

Also, it should be noted that the deflection (or strain) reaches a higher limiting value at 165° C than at 170° C. This might be considered an artifact of the experiment at first. However, in reality this is confirmation of the Joule effect mentioned in Chapter 1. More evidence of this phenomenon will be given later. 

Rather than evaluate each measurement point separately, plot the energy of each measurement point on a common shaft. First, the vertical measurements were plotted to determine the mode shape of the machine s shaft. This plot indicates that the outboard end of the motor shaft is displaced much more than the remaining shaft. This limits the machine problem to the rear of the motor. Based strictly on the overall value, the probable cause is loose motor mounts on the rear motor feet. The second step was plotting the horizontal mode shape. This plot indicates that the shaft is deflected between the pillow block bearings. Without additional information, the mode shaft suggests a bent shaft between the bearings. 

Pressure oscillations in the first arrangement depended on the equivalence ratio of the flow in the annulus and decreased with velocities in the pilot stream greater than that in the main flow due to decrease in size of the recirculation zone behind the annular ring and its deflection towards the wall. Increase in swirl number of the second arrangement caused the lean flammability limit to decrease, and the pressure oscillations to increase at smaller values of equivalence ratio. Unpremixedness associated with large fuel concentrations at the centre of the duct increased the pressure oscillations. Pressure oscillations caused the position of flame attachment to move downstream in both flows with a decrease in amplitude of oscillations. 

In Fig. 11, three such plots are represented for different values of l. Obviously, if ltV2 is sufficiently large, the curves approach the reversible limit (7rf)-1/2, as follows from eqns. (35b) and (38). It can be calculated that a significant deflection from reversible behaviour (> 10%) is observed if ltV2 2.
