Decorative foil

To make a decorated plate, the mold is opened shortly after the main charge of molding compound has been pressed iato shape, the decorative foil is laid ia the mold on top of the partially cured plate, ptinted side down, and the mold closed again to complete the curing process. The melamiae-treated foil is thus fused to the molded plate and, as with the decorative lamiaate, the overlay becomes transparent so that the ptinted design shows through yet is protected by the film of cured resia. 

Because of their conductivity, reflecting effect, and light barrier properties, metallized films are increasingly used as functional coatings in technical applications. Examples include battery cell cases, prepaid telephone cards, self-adhesive labels, insulation foil in the building industry, decorative foil for design elements, security features for bank notes, and tear tapes, etc. 

In-mold decoration can be done with either injection molding of thermoplastics or compression molding of thermosets. Thermosetting plastics are decorated with a two-stage process. For melamine products, for example, the mold is loaded with the molding powder in the usual manner and closed. It is opened after a partial cure, and the decorative "foil or overlay is placed in position. 

An interesting application of MF resins in compression molding involves decorative foils made by impregnating a printed or decorated grade of paper with resin and then drying. The foil may be applied to a compression molding shortly before the cure is complete, and the resin in the foil may be cured in that position to produce a bonding. 

Aqueous nitrocellulose lacquers that contain small amounts of solvent are used in the form of emulsions or dispersions to coat leather [2.4] and decorative foils. Solvent-free dispersions are cured by UV radiation after evaporation of the water and are used to coat furniture, profiled boards, and paper.
