Uses. The most important areas of use of pigments are paints, varnishes, plastics, artists colors, printing inks for paper and textiles, leather decoration, building materials (cement, renderings, concrete bricks and tiles—mostly based on iron oxide and chromium oxide pigments), leather imitates, floor coverings, rubber, paper, cosmetics, ceramic glazes, and enamels. 

Pt has the highest adsorption of methanol on its surface, but its catalytic properties are low due to the formation of poison species (most notably CO) that can be oxidized only after the Pt is covered with OH. Platinum-based bimetallic electrocatalysts, such as Pt-Ru alloys and Ru-decorated Pt materials, are the most active ones. The bi-functional mechanism is to a large extent operative in these catalysts. Most commercial Pt-Ru catalysts are based on 1 1 Pt-Ru alloy. While the alloys typically show enhanced activity in comparison with pure Pt, there is significant Pt loading in the bulk of the alloy in which catalysis does not proceed because the sites are inaccessible for methanol adsorption hence, the need for reducing the Pt content. 

The back side of the substrate is coated with the above formulation to prevent migration of organic stainants from the underlining floor or wall into the decorative portion of the covering material.

The use of c. goes back to prehistoric times. Until the middle of the 18 century, they were made of - beeswax, -+tallow, ->spermaceti and ->stearin. The main raw materials today are paraffin and other hydrocarbon waxes, but products based on RR, especially beeswax (in high value c. and for making wax sheets as decorative cover) and stearin as opacifier, are still in use. Numerous formulations, to tailor the color and the performance of a c. to the specific need, are in use. 

It shall be unlawful for any person to manufacture, sell, or offer to sell any toy or plaything, including children s furniture, decorated or covered with paint or any other material containing lead or other substance of a poisonous nature, from contact with which children may be injuriously affected, unless such article shall contain a label affixed thereto stating in clear and unambiguous language that the said paint, or other material, contains lead or other substance of a poisonous nature. 

Two main properties render a material valuable for producing a pigment that it reflects light of a particular color and that it covers and hides underlying surface imperfections, a property known as hiding power. It is also these two properties that make pigments ideal materials for making paints, preparations used to decorate and protect surfaces and obliterate their imperfections (see Textbox 18). Paints have been made and used since very early antiquity (Colombo 1995 Ashok 1993). 

Textiles are among the most ubiquitous materials in society. They provide shelter and protection from the environment in the form of apparel, as well as comfort and decoration in the form of household textiles such as sheets, upholstery, carpeting, drapery, and wall covering, and they serve a variety of industrial functions, eg, as tire reinforcement, tenting, filter media, conveyor belts, insulation, and reinforcement media in various composite materials.
