Second surface coating (decorative coating) The reflective coating (usually aluminum) that is used underneath the lacquer coating. The lacquer coating (topcoat) is used to give color and texture to the coated part. [Pg.693]

Lay-up proceeds by laying down the veneer which is to be the back surface of the panel. Then a sufficient number of pieces of core veneer are passed through the glue spreader to form the next layer of cross-oriented veneer. The glue spreader commonly used in hardwood plywood manufacture is a roU coater in which a pair of opposing mbber roUs are coated with a thin layer of adhesive. As the veneer is passed between the roUs, the adhesive is transferred to the surfaces of the veneer. Adhesive is appHed only to the cross-pfles and in sufficient quantity to provide a continuous layer on both opposing faces of veneer. Thus, in the case of a three-ply panel, only the core layer is spread with adhesive and in that of a five-ply panel, the second and fourth layers both of which are cross-pfles, are spread with adhesive. Then the top surface veneer, which is normally the decorative surface, is placed on the assembly. [Pg.382]

Damascus steel, also known in the Western world as Damascene steel, is a special type of steel that was and is still used to make sward and knifeblades. Apparently, Damascus steel was first made in India, where it was known as wootz or kuft, and later (during the second century b.c.e.) it was developed in Persia. The name "Damascus steel" was used by the Crusaders to describe the steel used by sword smiths of Damascus, Syria, famous for their ability to hammer and temper the steel into fine blades. The sword blades made from the steel had a reputation for their exceptional properties, especially their toughness, the retention of their cutting edge, as well as for a particular and characteristic decorative pattern on their surface (Figiel 1991). [Pg.228]

Most transport vesicles bud off as coated vesicles, with a unique set of proteins decorating their cytosolic surface. The coat has two major known functions. First, it concentrates and selects specific membrane proteins in a discrete portion of donor organelle membrane that will serve as origin to the transport vesicle. Second, the assembly of coat proteins into curved structures delineates the area of the forming transport vesicle. The size and curvature is a function of the coat composition. Thus, vesicles with similar vesicle coat have closely similar size and shape [3]. [Pg.141]
