Among common radionuclide sources are the natural environment, fallout from nuclear weapon tests, effluents from nuclear research laboratories, the nuclear power fuel cycle, radiopharmaceutical development, manufacturing, and various application, teaching and research uses. Decontamination and decommissioning activities at former nuclear facilities and the potential of terrorist radionuclide uses are current topics of interest for radioanalytical chemistry laboratories. This chapter addresses the decontamination and decommissioning (D D) plans and procedures that exist with respect to the SNL TA-V Hot Cell Facility (HCF). 

DOE Order 5480.23, Nuclear Safety Analysis Report (DOE 1992), Paragraph 8b(3)(t) of this order, as amplified in Attachment 1, Paragraph 4f(3)(d)20 (Topic 20), requires that the decontamination and decommissioning of the facility be addressed in the SAR. 

DOE Order 5820.2A, Radioactive Waste Management (DOE 1988), Chapter V of this order, "Decommissioning of Radioactively Contaminated Facilities," provides guidelines and requirements for the management, decontamination, and decommissioning of radioactively contaminated facilities. 

The system remains operable to support breathing mr, pneumatic actuators, and instrumentation. A preventive maintenance program will be maintained on all conqronoits of the system. Once K-Reactor decontamination and decommissioning are complete, the compressors will be removed firom service. 

Chapters 16 (waste disposal). Chapter 17 (radioactive materials transportation), and Chapter 18 (decontamination and decommissioning) are related to many radioactive processes and materials. Radioactive waste is generated wherever radioactive materials are handled and used. This includes medical applications of radioactive isotopes and their production, as well as the facilities and processes involved in nuclear power. This waste must be stored and/or disposed of in a way that isolates it from the environment until the radioactive materials decay.
