In both cases, the host structure in the low-temperature phase is orthorhombic and is based on a small distortion from the orthohexagonal description of the high-temperature structure. The structural relationship between the host and guest substructures along the tuimel remains incommensurate. Other urea inclusion compounds, such as 1,10-decanedicarboxylic acid/urea exhibit more complicated structural behavior in the low-temperature phase, with the formation of large superstructures in directions perpendicular to the tuimel axis. Thus, the exact nature of the distortion of the host structure in the low-temperature phase depends critically on the type of guest molecule. [Pg.1540]

Diaminodecane and 1,10-decanedicarboxylic acid were polyconden-sated in the presence of an organophihc clay to polymerize a nylon 1012 clay nano composite [27]. X-ray diffraction and TEM observations revealed that the clay layers were exfoliated and uniformly dispersed in nylon 1012. The speed of crystallization of the nanocomposite increased compared with nylon 1012. Furthermore, the tensile strength and the elastic modulus in tension were improved, and the amount of absorbed water was decreased through the improvement of the barrier characteristics. [Pg.162]

Fatty acids, both saturated and unsaturated, have found a variety of applications. Brassilic acid (1,11-un-decanedicarboxylic acid [BA]), an important monomer used in many polymer applications, is prepared from erucic acid (Scheme 2), obtained from rapeseed and crambe abyssinica oils by ozonolysis and oxidative cleavage [127]. For example, an oligomer of BA with 1,3-butane diol-lauric acid system is an effective plasticizer for polyvinylchloride. Polyester-based polyurethane elastomers are prepared from BA by condensing with ethylene glycol-propylene glycol. Polyamides based on BA are known to impart moisture resistance. [Pg.419]

This minor product has been now isolated and converted into the corresponding pentacyclo[5.3.0.0 .0 .0 ]decanedicarboxylic acid via intramolecular [2 - - 2] photocyclization. The material thereby obtained was converted into the corresponding cage di(p-nitrobenzyl ester) derivative via the method shown in Scheme 12. The structure of the resulting diester was established unequivocally as 40 via application of X-ray crystallographic methods (see Fig. 3.2) [28]. [Pg.45]
