Davies and Warren have investigated the nitration of naphthalene, ace-naphthene and eight dimethylnaphthalenes in acetic anhydride at o °C. Rates relative to naphthalene were determined by the competition method, and the nitro-isomers formed were separated by chromatographic and identified by spectrophotometric means. The results, which are summarised in the table, were discussed in terms of various steric effects, and the applicability of the additivity rule was examined. For the latter purpose use was made of the data of Alcorn and Wells (table 10.2) relating to the nitration of monomethyl-naphthalenes at 25 °C. In 1808, Sir Humphry Davy reported the production of Mg in the form of an amalgam by electrolytic reduction of its oxide using a Hg cathode. In 1828, the Fr scientist A. Bussy fused Mg chloride with metallic K and became the first to produce free metallic Mg. Michael Faraday, in 1833, was the first to produce free metallic Mg by electrolysis, using Mg chloride. For many years, however, the metal remained a laboratory curiosity. In 1886, manuf of Mg was undertaken on a production scale in Ger, using electrolysis of fused Mg chloride. Until 1915, Ger remained the sole producer of Mg. However, when a scarcity of Mg arose in the USA as a result of the Brit blockade of Ger in 1915, and the price of Mg soared from 1.65 to 5.00 per lb, three producers initiated operations and thus started a Mg industry in the USA. Subsequently, additional companies attempted production of Mg, but by 1920 only two producers remained — The Dow Chemical Co (one of the original three producers) and. the American Magnesium Corn. In 1927. the latter ceased production, and Dow continued to be the sole domestic producer until 1941. The source of Mg chloride was brine pumped from deep wells. During our research in this field of small-ring heterocycles we found that functionahzed aziridines are attractive chiral catalysts, e.g., in the diethylzinc addition to aldehydes. Aspects of such uses of aziridines will be discussed as well. This overview does not pretend to be an exhaustive coverage of all existing literature on small-ring aza-heterocycles as that would require a separate monograph. Instead, emphasis is put on functionahzed three-membered aza-heterocycles, that were investigated in the author s laboratory [1], and relevant related literature. The older literature on these heterocycles is adequately summarized in some extensive reviews [2]. Chiral aziridines have been reviewed recently by Tanner [3], by Osborn and Sweeney [4], and by McCoull and Davis [5]. [Pg.94]

To be useful to those concerned with choices in the allocation of health and social care resources, the data for economic evaluations need to be timely, relevant, credible and accurate (Davies, 1998). As a minimum, the costs associated with the interventions should be estimated from activity data, which quantify resources used, and price or unit cost data. Often evidence from well-controlled prospective trials with high internal validity is required to establish whether differences in economic end points are directly attributable to the interventions. However, the economic evaluations of acetylcholinesterase inhibitors estimated costs from retrospective analysis of available datasets Qonsson et al, 1999b), analysis of published literature (e.g. Stewart et al, 1998) and expert opinion (e.g. O Brien et al, 1999 Neumann et al, 1999). This means that it is not clear whether differences in costs were due to the anticholinesterase inhibitors or to other factors such as availability of services in different areas, the living situation of the patient, or disease severity. [Pg.84]
