Dating strata

Chronological associations of these kinds establish the dating of the pottery therefore, similar pottery can be used for dating strata in sites where other dating evidence is absent. Because pottery is never absent, it is the most commonly used material for dating, either by itself or in a supporting role. 

Although the main application of amino-acid isomerization is in dating strata, differences in mean temperature between horizons have been estimated, yielding information on Quaternary climatic changes (e.g. Miller et al. 1987).This application requires independent dating and the use of approximate first order kinetics to describe the isomerization. 

Atopic dermatitis is the most common itchy dermatosis, with well-documented alteration in the stratum comeum function. Numerous studies have revealed an increase in the basal transepidermal water loss (TEWL) in the stratum corneum of patients with this condition. Of note, this increase in TEWL was also described in the clinically unaffected skin of atopies.2 There have been direct correlations shown between the degree of inflammation and severity of barrier impairment in atopic dermatitis. Despite these findings, to date there have been no definitive reports correlating degree of barrier function with itch variability.

The Bivak cave, already mentioned above in connection with its lower strata, is situated on the other (northwestern) side of the Pilis Hill. Two Gravettian implements of non-cave nature (Vertes, 1965, p. 195) have been found in its upper loessy layer. The rodent fauna is very similar in composition to that of rock shelter no. 1 of Pilisszanto [arctic lemming Dicrostonyx), snow vole, and the narrow-skulled vole Microtus nivalis and gregalis) (twice as many specimens as the former two)], but in the large-mammal fauna the cave bear (U. spelaeus) predominates. Thus, since the two localities are so close geographically, the differences that exist between the two faunas are due to stratigraphical rather than facies differences. The yellowish stratum of the Bivak cave must certainly be dated as older than Pilisszanto no. 1. 

To date, Monteiro-Riviere and co-workers [60] have published the only studies using electron microscopy to examine the mechanism of iontophoretic transport. They applied mercuric chloride (7.4%) in vivo in pigs for 1 hr (current density 200 p,A/cm ) and subsequently exposed the biopsies to ammonium sulfide vapor to precipitate and localize the mercury, similar to earlier passive transport studies [28]. The micrographs revealed that mercuric chloride traverses intracellularly through the first few layers and intercellularly through the remainder of the stratum comeum. The authors concluded that the intercellular pathway is the predominant route for passive and iontophoretic drug delivery systems. However, it is difficult to eliminate follicular transport as a possible pathway, since only small areas can be examined at a time ( 1 mm ) and the low density of hair follicles (11/cm ) makes it difficult to study them with the electron microscope. 

It is the goal of this chapter to provide an up-to-date overview of the applications of infrared spectroscopy and differential scanning calorimetry to the study of stratum comeum barrier function. The reader is referred to previous, excellent reviews of the literature upon which this article has its foundation [23-27]. 

Easy Phytic solution (see Chapter 11) is a slow-release and self-neutralizing mixture of fruit acids and phytic acid (pH <1). The role of the skin as a portal of entry for chiral molecules is becoming an increasingly active and exciting field of research. To date, however, only a few investigations have been focused on the effect of enantiomeric differences of chiral drugs with respect to binding or metabolism in the skin on their transdermal delivery. There may be several sources for any observed enantioselectivity in terms of skin permeation of chiral drugs. For example, the components of the stratum corneum such as keratin and ceramides can serve as sources for chiral discrimination that could result in differential diffusion rates, dependent upon the stereochemistry of the solute. 

Since sediments are deposited, it follows that the topmost layer in any succession of strata is the youngest. Also, any particular stratum in a sequence can be dated by its position in the sequence relative to other strata. This is the Law of Superposition. This principle applies to all sedimentary rocks except, of course, those that have been overturned by folding or where older strata have been thrust over younger rocks. To date, Raman spectroscopy has been used for the characterization of stratum corneum, epidermal membrane and dermal tissue. Of current interest is the administration of therapeutic agents across the skin barrier (transdermal drug delivery) however, there are a number of difficulties which involve the supply, storage and use of biohazardous human material.
